The new SecDef is calling for 92,000 more troops over the next five years for the WOT. The fact is that more ground troops are not what's needed. Intelligence assets (like Valerie Plame and her now-defunct cover), international law enforcement cooperation, and elite units are what's necessary to fight this so-called War On Terror. The only real reason I can see for calling for more active duty regular troops is to provide more cannon fodder for invasion of more sovereign nations that are allegedly supporting terrorism.
Terrorists cannot be fought by conventional military means because they, themselves, have no need to hold territory. Ordinary troops are not trained to identify and hunt down criminals...all they can do is eliminate or capture people who have already been identified (either accurately or otherwise).
Condi Rice says they don't consider this "surge" to be an escalation. Of course it's an escalation. Sending more troops into a country where they already say they don't want the troops that are already there can be considered nothing but an escalation. Even if they don't consider it one, it's just more evidence that they've divorced themselves from reality.
It's all smoke and mirrors and misdirection. I think it's too late now, though. The people are starting to see through them in even greater numbers than they were on Nov 7th.
We're watching a serious implosion here. They're coming unglued right in front of us.
