I believe that most Americans want "success" in Iraq in the sense that we wish the best for the Iraqi people and think that is more likely to happen after we withdraw.

Most people I know, many who are not Democrats or liberals (there not being many of either of those in my county) do not wish death and mayhem on Iraqis. They view Iraqi civilians as victims of first Saddam and now caught between the US military and the insurgents (patriotic resistance, whatever).

Do most of my acquaintances think more about their own situations (jobs, families, health, schools, communities) than they do about Iraqis? Sure. If that makes them particularly evil or uncaring, then so be it. I believe that their attitudes are fairly typical of people around the world.

"Our" success in Iraq is, indeed, not important. "Success" for the Iraqi people is important to me, in the sense that I do not wish violence and oppression on any people. While nothing is life is guaranteed, I think that success for Iraqis is more likely after we leave, so I support our withdrawal.
