Who'll get the last word?

On Jan. 18, television will witness a historic meeting of two alter-egos (or just egos) when Bill O'Reilly and Stephen Colbert are guests on each others' shows on the same night. Colbert, who has modeled his TV persona on O'Reilly, said in a statement, "It is an honor to speak face to face with a broadcasting legend, and I feel the same way about Mr. O'Reilly."

When Jon Stewart went on Crossfire, he said, "I will not be your trained monkey to perform my schtick for your amusement."

Colbert needs to do the interview "out of character," lest he make himself look as foolish as Dennis Miller was the first time Jon Stewart interviewed him on The Daily Show.

Stewart just let Miller be HIS trained monkey, while Jon laughed and laughed.

And if Bill Orally says Colbert is modeling his character on Bill O'Reilly, Stephen should say something like, "No, I'm modeling my character on Senator Joe McCarthy. I find it fascinating that you see yourself in it."

14. A note on satire and right-wingers...

I've been compiling footage of Colbert featuring the WHC Dinner speech. I've got a beta version of a DVD that introduces Colbert's style of humor (60 minutes; pilot episode of The Colbert Report, etc.) then shows some of his best stuff. I'm doing it for my own pleasure, mostly, and to learn a bit about video editing.

My mother is a huge fan of O'Reilly, so when she got curious about my Colbert Collage I showed her the most innocent stuff. The one thing I thought she'd object to was Colbert's interview with Congressman Gingri when he carried the homophobic agenda too far and made Gingri look like a total idiot. She commented that she thought Gingri had done a good job. Good job? Colbert made him look like an ass!

I heard the news about Colbert's face-off through my mother who watches O'Reilly religiously. "What's that guy's name...the guy you like???" :eyes: Sigh. O'Reilly isn't very fair about letting his guests speak. As much as I admire and enjoy Colbert, I'm a bit worried.

what he did was not only brilliant, it gave the liberals teeth. We've been very polite and courteous and have taken the high road while the Bushies send out their paid assassins -- like the Swiftboat Liars for Hire. Kerry took the high road. Fine. That's his choice.
But the situation in our country is now so dire that we can no longer afford to be mannerly and observe the rules of etiquette.
Colbert didn't. He was brutal...while ostensibly being a pro-Bush cheerleader.
Wonderful.
And he really went for the jugular. None of that soft-ball good humored ribbing. No. And he made his case right there next to Bush. Not in some newspaper column or radio show.
Right to his face. Bush could not ignore him or have his handlers shield him. He had to sit there and listen to criticism.
Colbert's performance really energized me. And I truly believe it helped sweep the Dems to victory.

O'Reilly would be a fool to try to go toe-to-toe with a trained comedian of Colbert's caliber. So, being that O'Reilly IS a fool, this should be interesting indeed.

As Beck says, "I only say what other people are thinking."

People are raised on truthiness. Then, along comes some egghead who tries to counteract what they love to believe with facts. When an O'Reilly comes back and defends truthiness, it gives them comfort. Makes them feel superior. The fact that he's so threatening he overwhelms most of the people who disagree with him proves to the them that they're associated with not only truth but power.

More a political statement than a real working product, a couple of lefty types are selling a filter called the Fox Blocker that is supposed to block all reception of the Fox News channel on your television. We're counting down the seconds until someone introduces a CNN Blocker (as of this writing CNNblocker.com is still available), but having actually been on Fox News a few times, we can completely understand someone wanting to take whatever steps necessary to prevent themselves from accidentally being exposed to us talking with Neil Cavuto about how and when the robots are going to wake up and turn against us (true story!).

17. Believe it or not, I think O'Reilly's feelings will actually get hurt

His last interview with David Letterman really shook him.

Captain Phonesex kept trying to convince Letterman's audience, "We're really friends. This is all just an act, folks." It was very sad. He was really pleading with them.

That's why Bill-O went after Danny DiVito so savagely-- Bill Orally was jealous that HE wasn't the one out drinking with Batman.

his red-faced, indignant, angry old man persona. The cranky old man on the porch ("you kids get offa my lawn!) He'll be like those poor congressmen/women who appear on Colbert's show and think they can go one-on-one with him. And then get all confused by his "supportive" persona and end up agreeing to the most egregious comments, catching themselves, back-tracking. At the end, they're like deer in the headlights. Stunned.

And it's doubtful either one of them has to "cash in", particularly Colbert. Jon Stewart and Stephen have been making fun of "papa bear O'Reilly" for a long, long, time. Colbert admits his character is based somewhat on O'reilly because he's the "best" - best what I'm not exactly sure, but I'd say idiotic newscaster, which is what Colbert makes fun of every night on his show.

O'Reilly is jealous of the attention Colbert and Stewart are getting, and wants to seem "cool", and I'd guess it's an opportunity Stephen just couldn't pass up.

I would bet Jon is helping Stephen out here, and really looking forward to it - I don't think O'leilly has a chance, really - unless Stephen decides to be even further right wing than O'leilly is, which I can see him doing.

There used to be a ton of stuff on Youtube you could watch but I think most of it has been removed. I wish it hadn't - you'd definitely see they're not "buddies".

Do you watch Colbert? Have you ever read or watched an interview with him, when he's not in character? This is the kind of thing he LIVES for (and I'm not talking about money).

O'reilly probably just wants to appear "cool", and in touch - he failed miserably when he appeared on The Daily Show, and my guess is he'll fail again with Colbert. I'm not sure how you think they'll "make money" together - and they're certainly not "buddies". I must just not be as cynical as you are...
