CLEVELAND (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture will send an inspector to the Cleveland Clinic to probe the killing of a dog that was used in a sales training session, the agency said Friday.
The clinic, known for its heart center and for treating high-profile patients such as royalty, had reported itself to the USDA, which regulates animal testing.
A neurosurgeon had induced a brain aneurysm in a dog to demonstrate a medical device Wednesday to a group of 20 to 25 salespeople.
The clinic says the procedure wasn't authorized and the hospital bans such use of animals. The USDA says its not illegal to use dogs or other animals while demonstrating medical devices...

...About two-dozen salespeople from the device's manufacturer watched the demonstration, and at least some participated in some sort of hands-on exercise, a Clinic spokeswoman said.
The dog was placed under anesthesia for the procedure and then killed afterward.
The incident took place without permission of the hospital's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, which is supposed to review any request to work with animals...
Shalin Gala, a research associate at PETA, said the organization received a tip Wednesday that salespeople from California-based Micrus Endovascular Corp. were training in the use of the MicroCoil system so they would be knowledgeable when making sales pitches...

I'm appalled! The doctor needs to be disciplined accordingly--perhaps some "demonstration" on him might be a fair punishment! Let's hope the poor dog is finally at peace...

World Class Care, right? Sad thing is people in this city/region will still hold that place, and those arrogant sons of b1tches in high esteem. Serves you all right, and you should not be shocked.

The fact that they did this at the Clinic doesn't surprise me. Was this one of the devices that they have a vested interest in? How much was this "animal vendor" paid? Also..wasn't the clinic in trouble years ago about doing testing on animals or something along those lines? The Clinic has turned into nothing but a multi-million dollar money machine!...

Re: URGENT REQUEST TO END TODAY'S MICROCOIL SYSTEM LIVE-ANIMAL SALES TRAINING:
NON-ANIMAL METHODS AVAILABLE...
I am writing on behalf of the more than 1.6 million members and supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) regarding an urgent matter-specifically, the unnecessary use of live dogs in a sales training exercise that will be held today at the Cleveland Clinic. We have learned that the instructor will induce aneurysms in the healthy animals during the Micrus MicroCoil System sales training program. There are valid non-animal embolic coil training models available, and the Animal Welfare Act requires the consideration of non-animal training methods. We ask that you please quickly intervene and stop today's dog lab in favor of this alternative and establish a formal policy prohibiting the use of animals for training purposes...
Doctor sacrifices dog during sales demonstration
http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=61611CLEVELAND -- ...Dr. White, who founded the Brain Research Laboratory at Cleveland's Metropolitan General Hospital in 1961, and pioneered many developmens in brain surgery says demonstrations such as the one which took place at the Cleveland Clinic this week are sometimes necessary.
Dr. White, who had no part in the demonstration and is not associated with the Cleveland Clinic says, "In order to know how this device is to be utilized in human beings, these men and women - sales people - really need to see this demonstrated."...
Dr. White does not see it that way.
"I frankly disagree with the clinic. I do not feel this was inappropriate," said Dr. White, who in the early 1960's gained international attention BY TRANSPLANTING THE HEADS OF TWO MONKEYS......
