U.S. soldiers weary of more sacrifice
Jan. 12, 2007

<snip>

Soldiers skeptical

Many of the soldiers at Fort Benning have already served two tours in Iraq. At least 34 Fort Benning soldiers have died there.

As they and others like them across the country digested the news and its promise of longer or additional deployments, soldiers and their families -- as well as veterans of previous wars -- reacted wearily.

Some current soldiers said they were prepared to undertake the extended mission, even as they acknowledged the hardship it presented. Others were more skeptical. Even if they once supported the war and were prepared to sacrifice life and limb, they're not so sure the sacrifices they're making are being shared widely.

At Fort Benning, Spec. Paul Todd, a small-arms repairman from Oklahoma City, said that while opinions in the Army are mixed, ``we will still do what we're supposed to do.''

Yet Todd said he sometimes has doubts about the war.

3. We've ALL sacrificed.
Higher cost of living reduces buying power for the economy.

Offshoring exterminates it and those who can't get replacement jobs, and those who do the hiring seem very specific in qualifiers - often enough choosing bad ones like being an extrovert (most of which, from my observations, just chatter with each other and ignore the duties of their job and/or the customers but that's what Target and the others want, so more power to them). That's not free trade or trade of any sort. That's selling out. Or maybe the corporate elite are balancing the table so everybody can eventually trade on the same level.

I dunno. Gotta ride it out.

6. This is very interesting since this is where * went to tout his "surge" to
an audience that has no choice but to listen. I'm surprised this reporter got any quotes since the soldiers were told by their commanding officer not to speak to the press. I guess once * left they were allowed to speak and think again. I wonder if the quoted soldiers will get "counseled"?
