Bush vows to 60 Minutes that 'no matter what Congress wants' surge is on

RAW STORY
Published: Saturday January 13, 2007

In an interview set to air on this Sunday's 60 Minutes, President George W. Bush vows to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq "no matter what" the Democratic-controlled Congress tries to do.

"Do you believe as Commander in Chief you have the authority to put the troops in there no matter what the Congress wants to do," 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley asks Bush in the short clip uploaded to the CBS News web site Friday night.

"I think I've got, in this situation, I do, yeah," Bush said.

"Now I fully understand they will," Bush continued, "they could try to stop me from doing it, but, uh, I've made my decision and we're going forward."

12. I'm wondering if he's been "talking with God" again, cuz I can't think of
anyone here on this earth, outside of maaybe Cheney, who was thinking this was a "plan".

Remember when the Iraq Study Group was first announced and the nut said something to the effect of "well, we're working on a plan too". Then shortly after the Baker and Co. plan was announced, the nut started making major personnel changes. So now he's surrounded himself with all these second stringers and we're to believe this was their plan? I dunno...have you ever been the new guy on a job when there's a major project on the table, the place is in chaos, and you're trying to impress your new boss? All the while, in the back of your head, you're thinking about the circumstances of the guy you've replaced. Would you be willing to make waves with the chief nut?

I'm wondering if the guy still doesn't think he's on a mission from God. It's God's war, God doesn't loose and you don't second-guess the big guy in the sky. That might even explain the die hard supporters in the last polling.

Whatever his "reasoning", yeah I agree the guy is certifiably nuts and needs to be stopped.

3. I said this elsewhere: he only goes on tv for interviews *when*
he is tanking (polls) - and he *always* does horribly. He always reconfirms to the public *why* he was/is tanking. This exchange... "I've made my decision and we're going forward..." just proves the cycle will continue.

4. He ignores the results of the 2006 election
And the Constitution itself. Will he also ignore the 2008 election and the 25th Amendment and declare himself dictator? Be prepared for civil war in this country in 2009.

5. Sounds like he just claimed dictatorial powers.
The Congress must call him on this. Immediately. If they do not they remain as ineffective and as irrelevant as when the republicans had power.

No impeachment, Ms. Pelosi??? Still?????

6. Now this should be interesting.
The video of those words will be important. Why? Because those are "fightin' words":

"they could try to stop me from doing it"

He's just slapped the ego of every Congress-critter right across the face.

And if he looks at all hesitant in saying that, baby, there's blood in the water.

7. Remember your dealing with someone that has the same people that told
tricky Dick that he had the war time prezinut powers and tricky Dick was brought down. Same will happen to shrub, he has gotten used to a rubber stamp congress that chose to look the other way on what shrub was doing. Just sit back and enjoy the show, with all the prodding the dems are getting from we the people shrub will find out the hard way that he will not get away with his king George act. I think most are so used to the rubber stamp congress that you fear that the repuke propaganda machine was right, dems are weak and spineless. You forget that without control of house and senate dems were left out in the cold. The questioning of Condilier this week should have been a sign that somethings afoot and it don't bode well for the neo cons.

8. He's challenging congress to stop funding...
Edited on Sat Jan-13-07 10:04 AM by sofeisty
I think he's trying to challenge Congress (specifically the Democrats in Congress) to stop funding. Basically throwing down the gauntlet and calling their bluff. Hopefully they will not fall for the bait and will let his words hang out there and allow him to hang himself with them.If they cave they have played right into his hands and have allowed him off the hook.

14. I think he's getting his scapegoats all in a row. Pushing Congress
to restrict his actions so they can be blamed for the ensuing mess. On the other side he's setting some pretty high expectations on Maliki's government in those "benchmarks" so he can blame them.

He's muddied the waters enough that attention will be drawn away from how we got into the mess to begin with for years to come.

10. This Removes the Possibility
that Bush will accept the Democrats' restrictions and blame them for not giving him the means to win the war. He will veto and if necessary probably ignore the law to go forward with the surge. In the long run, that will cost him further support and result in a major backlash. And if he starts bombing Iran, that will make it even worse.

17. Shouldn't we change his name to Charles Stuart III, then?
My ancestor who helped found North Carolina held old Charlie's reins for him when he dismounted for the last time during the English Civil War...
That was why he hightailed it to America and I look like I do today.
At least he knew when a cause was lost! And Charles was dignified at his beheading, unlike James, flying off to France when the fat baby was born...
