On CSPAN2 - 12pm - Internal Combustion: How Corporations and Governments Addicted the World to Oil
Internal Combustion: How Corporations and Governments Addicted the World to Oil and Derailed the Alternatives
Edwin Black

At a recent meeting of the American Jewish Committee's Institute for Analysis of Global Security in Washington, DC, Edwin Black describes how the automotive and petroleum industries have encouraged oil dependence. Mr. Black begins by telling his audience that people have been trying to monopolize resources -- wood, water, electricity, etc. -- since the beginning of human history. He then explains that the first battery-powered car was developed in the 1890s, but its production was undermined by advocates of the internal combustion engine. Edwin Black concludes his talk by weighing in on the feasability of alternative energy sources such as corn & sugar cane ethanol, hydrogen, nuclear power, and solar power.

Edwin Black is the author of six books, including "IBM and the Holocaust" and "Banking on Baghdad." He is an investigative journalist and syndicated columnist who has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize nine times.

I have 2 small motorcycles. One of them runs on electricity and the other runs on gasoline. I haven't used the gasoline bike since 2003.

4. I was lucky enough to have dinner w Edwin Black last month when he was in town
for a lecture. Very interesting man! Harvey Wasserman & Bob Fitrakis (freepress.org) were also there and it was a very in depth conversation on the need for changing our energy usage for national security reasons.

17. No, at least he has a lot of intersting info.
I didn't know the mile a minute record was set in 1899 in France by the Red Devil train, either.

He sounds like he is very used to lecturing to students...

If he keeps me involved and my attention focused I am less able to multi-task and do seven other things at once.

Gosh darn him for being interesting and having such interesting facts.

30. He admits CNG is a temporary fix, but it is available in our hemisphere. I didn't
agree with this aspect of what he preached. CNG is also a finite fossil fuel as we all know. There are other alternatives that I believe make better sense.

he contends that if there is a mass demand (ie fleets) for alternative (not hybrid-he dissed my Prius) vehicles the corporations will mass produce the vehicles. The technology is there.
