10,000 arrested in one week?
Operation FALCON III - Federal and Local Cops Organized Nationally - A massive fugitive operation took place the week of October 22- 28, 2006 and covered the eastern half of the United States. As a cooperative effort, Operation FALCON III removed some of the country’s most dangerous sex offenders and gang members from the streets, making America’s communities safer.

Deputy U.S. marshals have received worldwide praise for their skills in locating and arresting wanted criminals, but the assistance they receive from their colleagues at the local, state and federal levels often completes their ability to capture the worst of the worst. The U.S. marshals have embraced such productive interagency teamwork with other law enforcement officers at every level of government since their creation in fugitive investigations.

Deputy US marshals teamed up with their state, local, and federal colleagues in the largest fugitive sweep to ever primarily focus on violent sex offenders. FALCON III resulted in the arrest of 10,773 fugitives and the clearance of 13,333 warrants. Of those fugitives arrested, 1,659 were wanted for sexual offenses, 971 for not registering as sex offenders. In addition, 364 documented gang members were arrested, 3,609 narcotics / organized crime drug enforcement task force warrants were cleared, and 232 firearms were seized.

Teamwork ensured the success of this seven-day initiative. A total of 1,063 different agencies participated - 30 federal, 103 state, 430 county sheriffs / departments, 482 police departments, and 18 foreign agencies. Within the Marshals Service, 48 districts participated, including the Districts of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In all, each day more than 3,000 law enforcement officers worked together tirelessly during this record setting operation.

2. I think it's pretty good news.
Aside for the minor drug offenses, if there were any. I say good job, police!

11. I read the other replies, and I think I have a more favorable opinion of law enforcement

than some DUers. I guess I'm just moderate this way.
I still say it's great news that violent sex offenders and gang members got rounded up.

I mean, I fully agree that far too many Americans are incarcerated! But, prevention is the way to go. I would rather see intervention in families, and investing in children's education and well-being, so that children will less likely to become criminals, or worse, grow up to be a screwed up sex offender.

The way things are now, violent sex offenders and gang members should be locked up. It's better than having them loose.

Edited for punctuation.

12. It's not about dissing law enforcement
It's about rounding people up, taking habeus corpus away, building internment camps.

Now do you get it? :)

14. These were all warranted arrests.
So until I'm shown otherwise, I'll commend the operation.

Now an argument could be made that this is a training excercise for future operations, but I'm not quite that paranoid yet.

Peace,
-Hoot

3. somehow this does NOT make me feel safer.....
Any more than I feel reassured when the Military releases a news blurb saying they have taken out al Qaeda's latest number 2.

Now riddle me this - if these guys were so very dangerous how could it be that 10 THOUSAND arrests only yielded 232 guns?

Was this just a test run on the Feds/Pentagons new database? A practice run for when dissenters and antiwar protesters are called "enemies of the state" and defined as terrorits? It makes me sick that as an American citizen I would ever even have thoughts like this about my government.....

5. Wow! What power! Wait till they use all that coordination to go after Democrats
and house us in those brand new concentration camps that KBR just were paid hundreds of millions to build. This was just a trial run to see if they could all work together. Good! I guess it worked! Who's next!

8. How's this for an idea?
Why does it take this sort of operation for federal, state, and local enforcement agencies to do their jobs? Let's take just the 1,000 most serious offenses. How long were these fugitives free? How long had it been since they were to have done what it is they were arrested for not doing?

I'm not denigrating the jobs that police departments and police officers do daily. But if all of these agencies were doing their jobs routinely, wouldn't those 10,000 arrests have been made in the course of their daily work? Why does it take an operation of this magnitude to accomplish what should be accomplished in the course of the job? Sure, I know, overworked and underpaid. Nothing new about that. But they still go to work every day. Surely some resources could be dedicated to the job accomplished by this operation, no?

So what happens now? Another year goes by with another 10,000 fugitives free until the next major national operation?

15. What Nazi Germany did......

<snip>
Case Study:
The Jewish Holocaust, 1933-45

Summary

The holocaust inflicted upon European Jews by the Nazi regime was arguably the most systematic and sadistic campaign of mass extermination ever mounted. Like the Armenian and Rwandan holocausts, the "gendercidal" component is only a secondary and subsidiary one. Nonetheless, an understanding of the gendered strategies of incarceration and extermination pursued by the Nazis throws important light upon the Jewish holocaust, and genocidal strategies as a whole.
<......>

The Nazis did not invent the concentration camp, but they made it their definitive institution. For many years, it was almost exclusively men who were detained in the grim and often atrocious conditions of the camps. The first Nazi prison camp, Dachau -- created in March 1933 -- housed males only, including many homosexuals. A major marker on the road to the holocaust against the Jews was the Kristallnacht ("Night of Broken Glass") on November 9-10, 1938, when Hitler's thugs targeted Jewish citizens and property for largescale violence and destruction. According to Yehuda Bauer, the Kristallnacht was accompanied by a gender-selective mass roundup: the Nazis "arrested and sent to concentration camps some 30,000 Jewish men at least." (Cited in Chalk and Jonassohn, The History and Sociology of Genocide, p. 353.) As Eugen Kogon writes,

These arrests were made without regard for age. Ten-year old boys could be seen side by side with septuagenarians and octogenarians. En route from the Wiemar railroad station all stragglers were shot down, while the survivors were forced to drag the bloody bodies into camp. ... Inside stood the Block Leaders, wielding iron rods, whips and truncheons, and virtually every Jew who got into the camp sustained injuries. The events that took place at the time are not easily described in a few words. Let me merely mention that sixty-eight Jews went mad that very first night. They were clubbed to death like mad dogs ... four men at a time. ... SS noncoms pushed the heads of some of their charges into overflowing latrine buckets until they suffocated.
Eventually, "for reasons that never became clear, most of the Jews were set free on orders from the Reich authorities" and allowed to go into exile. Exactly a year later, however, after "an alleged attempt on Hitler's life," Jewish men in Buchenwald "were suddenly recalled from their details and confined to barracks." The Germans "picked out twenty-one Austrian and German Jews, entirely at random, without any list. Most of them were vigorous young men. ... The SS took the group out through the gatehouse and shot them at close range in the quarry." (Kogon, The Theory and Practice of Hell, Berkley paperback edition <1980>, pp. 176-79.)

Hitler's combined caution and brinkmanship in foreign policy won him increasing rewards during the 1930s. Western powers proved unable to unite, or to accept an alliance with the Soviets, to head off the Nazi threat. Eventually, Hitler struck a temporary deal with the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, freeing Germany to invade Poland -- the heartland of European Jewry -- in September 1939. From the earliest days of the Nazi occupation, Poland's Jews were subjected to severe hardship and violence. However, it was only with the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 that the genocidal hatred of the Nazis was fully unleashed on the defenseless populations of the east. Among those to suffer the worst, almost unacknowledged, were Soviet prisoners-of-war, who died in their millions from exposure, starvation, and mass execution in 1941-42. But from the first, it was clear that the German occupation of the vast new territories (including eastern Poland, which the Soviets had occupied under the terms of the Nazi-Soviet Pact) presented Hitler with the opportunity to implement his "final solution" to the Jewish "problem" in Europe. What followed was a genocide that Noam Chomsky has called "the most fantastic outburst of collective insanity in human history." (Cited in Robert F. Barsky, Noam Chomsky: A Life of Dissent , p. 186.)

Books on how this all happens:

Christopher R. Browning,
Ordinary Men: Reserve Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland
(Harper Perennial Library, 1993).

Browning's classic investigates how ordinary Germans "were transformed psychologically from the ordinary men of the title into active participants in the most monstrous crime in human history" (New York Times Book Review). For an impassioned critique, see Goldhagen (below).

Frank Chalk and Kurt Jonassohn,
The History and Sociology of Genocide: Analyses and Case Studies
(Yale University Press, 1990).

Perhaps the best single anthology of readings about genocide, with added commentary from two of the field's leading scholars.

Henry Friedlander,
The Origins of Nazi Genocide: From Euthanasia to the Final Solution
(University of North Carolina Press, 1995).

Friedlander examines the evolution of the Nazis' exterminationist policies, from the first murderous assaults against handicapped and infirm Germans to the systematic targeting of Jews, Roma, and others. The roles of the bureaucracy, judiciary, and scientific community all receive attention.

Daniel Jonah Goldhagen,
Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust
(Vintage Books, 1997).

A controversial but extremely powerful indictment of "ordinary Germans" and the role they played in the genocide against the Jews.
