WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush on Saturday challenged lawmakers skeptical of his new Iraq plan to propose their own strategy for stopping the violence in Baghdad.

"To oppose everything while proposing nothing is irresponsible," Bush said.

In a pitch to lawmakers and the American people, Bush said the United States will keep the onus on the Iraqi government to take charge of security and reach a political reconciliation. Democrats and many Republicans oppose the Bush plan to send 21,500 more U.S. troops into Iraq.

"Members of Congress have a right to express their views, and express them forcefully," Bush said. "But those who refuse to give this plan a chance to work have an obligation to offer an alternative that has a better chance for success. "

So DU, what's the plan? Give it your best shot... get us out of Iraq. You can go with "GET OUT NOW" if you like... I was sort of leaning towards that one but if there's a way to do that and mitigate the catastrophe we've created, I'm all ears.

Iraq's government, Bush and members of his administration. Have them put on trial. If Bush and members of his administration are able to make the case - then Iraq become America's 51st State (rather than an occupied Country). 13. Iraq is a HUGE mess with 110% of the responsibility for the mess.......

Sending in additional troops is ABSOLUTELY NOT the answer.The Iraqi citizens ALREADY believe, by a substantial majority, that it is OK to kill an American soldier or otherwise; MORE of our troops going door to door with Iraqi soldiers looking for 'insurgents' is ONLY going to make matters much worse and result in many more deaths on both sides. I would like to see a staged withdrawal of our troops from Baghdad in a relatively short period of time. Our troops would be relocated to the borders of Iraq to stop the influx of foreign fighters, weapons and influence. Intense diplomacy would be done, prior to the relocation of our troops, with the Iraqi government, Iraqi religious factions, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Palestine etc. bushco has proved to be totally incapable of diplomacy, so Congress would have to summon all the very best US diplomats from the past and present to execute REAL diplomacy with ALL these different nations and groups simultaneously. The Iraqis need to be given the chance to run their own country; this endeavor may be impossible, but they still must have the chance to do it, even if failure is the result. The USA should NOT be building nations in the ME, or anywhere else. The removal of the 'occupiers' from the situation should dramatically reduce the tensions. The damn Iraqi religious factions need to find a way to peace in their own country.

Dick Durbin is the one that framed it as the Democratic response to Bush's taped speech -- and I agree with him.

We went there to depose Saddam, stop al Queda from acquiring Saddam's WMD, destroy any WMD that existed, and help the Iraqi people set up the beginnings of a democracy. We've succeeded totally and completely in those goals. We no longer have any congressionally approved reason to be there.
