Transcript Of Mr. Gore's Magnificent SpeechVideo of Mr. Gore's SpeechIn Mr. Gore's magnificent treatise on government and the excesses of presidential power that he delivered a year ago, he used the phrase, "the consent of the governed." He called those of us who are the governed to seek within us the same spirit that steered our forefathers through the tossed and stormy seas of great change to birth a nation to now guide us to a new "golden age." His words were daring, bold, brave, visionary, and at the same time reminiscent of that very spirit that first saw us fighting an empire and changing the course of history. They were words that made me proud for the first time in a long time to be an American.
The main point I then wish to express to Mr. Gore then is, if this government truly were a government that operated at the behest and consent of the governed, you would not have had to make this speech. For you would be sitting in the very house you were elected to by the consent of the governed...but yet, we as a nation failed to also uphold our responsibility as citizens. And this is also then the message I took from Mr. Gore's words to the Congress to fulfill the oaths they took, and to the American people to fight for their Constitution. These abuses are then seen as condoned unless challenged.
The fact that they were able to do so with no checks and balances in place has only led them to the abuses outlined in Mr. Gore's speech. As he also stated, it is human nature to take more and more if you will be rewarded for it.
The coup of 2000 was the turning point in the history of this nation. By the people and this Congress not rising up to put a stop to that abuse of power against the consent of the governed, it has now mushroomed into a string of abuses that as Mr. Gore rightfully claims may not need to be repeated, because they will be perpetual. And make no mistake about it, it
is a treacherous usurpation of the Constitutional rights of the American people for we as a nation to continue to allow these unconstitutionally placed people to continue in this government as is.
Therefore, from this speech of Mr. Gore's last year I not only got from it the sense that our country is in grave danger the longer we allow these usurpations to continue, but we have put ourselves in that danger by not effectively and swiftly using the checks and balances at our disposal in the Constitution to keep those who would thwart our will from doing so... And the time has come for us to do exactly that.
For me this speech was not just a clarion call to keep the feet of our legislative and judicial branches to the fire regarding investigating and prosecuting these crimes and abuses. It was also a clarion call for me and whoever else may feel the moral outrage at what took place in 2000 that led us here, to forge ahead in righting that wrong. And that means restoring the rule of law, Democratic dialogue, and accountability to those who dared to think they were above it.
Congress and we the American people have a long way to go in making up for what they have allowed to take place to so seriously damage our civil liberties and Constitutional safeguards. However, I believe we still have time to do so before it is too late if we put aside our petty differences and see the whole picture.
Congress must review the fraudulent and criminal circumstances under which these abuses were allowed to take place, ergo, investigating the fraud of the 2000 coup that was the starting point of it all. What happened in 2000 wasn't just a 'badly run campaign', or a 'bad election', it was a crime of the highest degree according to all rules of law, and it simply must not stand
because it has led us to today. Impeachment is now a moral imperative. The words Mr. Gore spoke in this speech were timely, and mainly concerned themselves with the abuses of an administration that must be put into check. However, I also sensed something between those words, and they said to us, it is now your time to make amends for what you have done and left undone.
It is now a year since this magnificent speech was delivered by the statesman of our time. In the year since this speech was delivered however, we still find ourselves open to constitutional abuses and lies by the same people in our Executive branch as were there last year. It is then sad that the inspiring clarion call to action to Congress and the American people delivered by Mr. Gore did little to bring the people to the point where these abuses would be enough to spark them to action to restore the rule of law.
Bush continues to BREAK THE LAW REPEATEDLY AND CONSISTENTLY and he is a danger to the the very structure of our government. Therefore, with a supposedly "new" Congress in place put there by the American people who seek action against these abuses we wait to now see whether the unitary executive power that now has brought Bush to believe he is a king will be reigned in by this new Congress that will do what the last Congress never did: UPHOLD THEIR OATHS and respect the will of the people.
I then entreat people to read the transcript of Mr. Gore's speech again and truly see it for it was and is: Not a "campaign speech", but the words of an American statesman who loves this country and wants to warn the people about how far we have strayed from the Constitution and allowed media conglomerate propaganda to hide the true deterioration of the principles that guided our beginning. It is an admonishment to both parties to uphold their oaths and to abstain from the thirty second million dollar sound bites that mean more that thoughtful Democratic debate, and it is an admonishment to us to hold them to those oaths.
This is why he has also written, "The Assault On Reason" which is to be released this May. It is to alert us to the dangers of what our indifference on all sides in taking action against these abuses has done to our Democratic process and to tell us that it us up to
us now to take it back street by street, city by city, and state by state. I truly hope that this will be the year that oaths will be upheld and more Americans will begin to speak out against the shameful abuses against our Constitution and our soul as a nation and demand accountability.
Had those who first settled this country not done so against their king there would have been no America. Are we so oblivious to our own history that we can dare to think our work is now done? Are we so arrogant as to think this country is not worth it? On the contrary, OUR work is just beginning and we better get moving. Therefore, once again Mr. Gore, THANK YOU for your inspiration. Let us hope the American people get up this year and truly heed your words.
