Wisconsin local "news" tonight...
Racine WI soldier recovered from sniper wound after going to Iraq just last Aug. 2006. After only 13 days in Iraq--7 days before his 21st birthday, his group's truck stopped to fix something. When they said let's go, he stood up and a sniper hit him in the hip and rectum. He was flown to Germany. He had a heart attack in surgery. His parents flew to Germany. A photographer from National Geographic captured the photos. He had more than 12 surgeries in Germany, was in a coma for a week and then was flown to Walter Reed. He has recovered and is now walking. He told the news crew how many others he saw without legs, arms or with caved in heads in hospitals. He said he was awarded a purple heart and feels like he "didn't do enough." His mother said he was given a gift because the sniper was aiming for his head but he stood up in the nick of time and took wounds to the hip and rectum instead.
He's more than lucky to be whole again--and very likely to be one of those who will be returned for the "surge."
