Rick Perry has activated the Texas National Guard for the ice storm, a ice storm I have been told about by television news for three or so days. I do not care to recieve any assistance from the national guard. I am of able body and if something happens that involves me I will take care of myself. If it is something I am not able to handle, then what happens will happen.

1. i am sittin in the middle of it and see no need for national guard.

is it worse elsewhere than the panhandle of texas. cause they got right on the roads and all is running smoothly. i dont have a clue why we would need national guard anywhere. but then i have not been watching local news.

Some areas are so devastated that you have, for example, elderly people in nursing homes without power and no generator. The Guard is being activated here, and one of their jobs will be supplying and setting up generators for situations like these.

I think we all know the drill.. everything closes and you get to stay home for a few days.
But to hear the news you would believe otherwise :shrug:
Granted this is a bit unusual for South Central Texas... but still its nothing new really.

You folks stay in and stay warm up there... its wet as hell down here and just now getting close to freezing.
The next couple of days should be interesting.

But there are people who could benefit from state assistance. This is the kind of thing for which the Guard *should* be used.

The Guard in OK has been put into service and will be setting up power supplies for places like nursing homes, shelter for individuals, and food for those who need it. Utility crews will also be assisted by the Guard.

At this moment there are communities in OK that are completely without power and *still* accumulating ice. People are dying because of this. If the governor here hadn't done something, like putting the Guard into service, he'd have right been called a fool.

I don't know the situation in Texas, but based on what I've been watching, SE OK and parts of north Texas seem to be in a similar situation.

6. The way the cold front has moved is so odd...

We have been trying to get rain on the Tennessee River, but all we get are grey skies and warmth...it is 65F at 11pm in Florence, outside of Huntsville, and I have two windows open in my bedroom...it is supposed to pour tomorrow and then be markedly cooler, but not overly cold after that. I walked alongside the creek yesterday and there was new spring growth everywhere, and my sister told me the buttercups were coming up over the top of the leaves.
We had a terrible ice storm here in 93, and two were killed downtown when an ancient oak's limbs gave way and crushed the roof of their car.
I feel for everyone in Texas, but am enjoying my spring in January while it lasts.

This is what the National Guard is for. The National Guard is not suppposed to be doing stupid Bush booty calls to Iraq, the National Guard is supposed to be here, in times of disasters.

11. Until you actually need it. That is sort of the point of providing social services.

They should be available in case of need. I don't see that making them available to those who might need them (even you) is something to denounce while posing as a moral high-grounder.

14. You can't the state and city requires you pay the taxes for 9-1-1 service

and have it, even if you are smart enough to store or write down the phone numbers for the police department, fire department, and your ambulance service.

Why would someone saying they don't want help from a group of people cause you to react as such?

So a big rain and flooding was forecast. The Guard went by in jeeps warning people to evacuate. Many did. But this old man with a Bible said, "I'm not going. I believe in God and He will protect me.

So it started raining and the water rose up to the porches. The guard went by in boats and took almost everybody else out. But the old man thumped his Bible and said, "I believe in God and God will protect me."

So it rained more and the rain was up to the rooftops. The Guard went by in helicopters and threw him a Jacob's ladder. The old man said, "I'm not going. I believe in God and God will protect me."

So it rained more and the water engulfed the old man and he drowned. He woke up in Heaven, sitting on a cloud, and he was PISSED. God walked by. The old man said, "Hey!!1 You!!1"

God said, "Are you talking to me?" The old man said, "Yes. Look what happened to me!!1 I thought you would protect me because I believed in you!!!1"

God said with some exasperation, " I sent you a jeep. I sent you a boat. I sent you a helicopter..."
