Some thing's I've read say that he's a lefty at heart and not a huge proponent of the war and some of the other New Labour policies. That said, it certainly didn't stop him from resigning from the cabinet when Blair backed the war. Maybe he knows it's better to keep his mouth shut until he's Prime Minister.

Also, politically it's a perfect opportunity to turn things around. Blair probably wishes he could go back and time and not jump on with Bush's war because it has completely ruined an otherwise great legacy. Brown has the opportunity to back away from this when he gets into office. Whether he will do it will be very interesting to see.
