GOP Nightmare Scenario Could/Should End Bush Presidency...
First, what is the 'GOP nightmare scenario?'

Bush gets us in deeper in Iraq, with huge loss of life, no discernible way out, expands the theatre of operations into Iran and Syria, and puts us in an impossible situation of needing more troops with none available to send. The bill comes due for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the economy goes in the ditch.

Congressional investigations unearth and expose blatant graft and corruption leading directly to the door of Bush and his oil buddies, and their corporate enablers. Now that Democrats are in the majority of both Houses of Congress, there is no stopping the outrageous revelations heading down the pipe.

There is no chance that Republicans will capture the White House in 2008. Worse, the Democratic Party will increase its majorities to such levels that the filibuster will be unavailable to Republicans in the Senate, and all committees in the House will completely shut out the Republicans to the extent that they will be completely powerless except to watch what is happening.

Second, in order to avoid the 'nightmare scenario' Republicans will have to try and salvage some semblance of sanity by opposing Bush's plans. Bush is unable to compromise. The only solution Republicans will be able to execute will be to tell Bush it is time to go voluntarily by resigning for some trumped up reason, or be ousted from office by impeachment and removal.

If and when this happens, it won't be because the Republicans reached across the aisle to join with Democrats to oust Bush. It will be done by Republicans on their own for their own selfish reasons out of a need to survive.

If you were a career Republican today on Capitol Hill, and this did not take place, where would you be planning to spend your future? It sure would not be as a member of Congress, and even if you had a term to serve out until the next election you would be so impaired by your minority status that reelection would be almost impossible.

Republicans really have no other choice if Bush continues with his present course of action.

1. Rethugs are in danger of becoming an extinct species
Much like the Whigs. And nothing would make me happier. Of course, the Democratic Party might split into two separate parties - Progressives and New Democrats (or something like that), but at least neo-conservatism would be DEAD.

33. The GOP has been left for dead before
After WW1, the GOP was in power in the years leading up to the Great Depression, which was caused by Republican economic policies... After FDR took over, the GOP and conservative business interests advocated alliance with fascists like Mussolini & Hitler. Meanwhile, FDR was doing his best to try to put Americans back to work while Hitler went on to become one of the great evil men in world history.

In the 1940s, the GOP was basically dead because of this. When Eisenhower ran as a Republic in 1952, he made a point to support liberal & Democratic social programs.

However, using the scare tactics of McCarthy in the 50s and then with Goldwater in the 60s advocating small government conservatism, the GOP started their comeback using their "stabbed in the back" philosphy.

( See this fantastic article on this mentality:
http://www.harpers.org/StabbedInTheBack.html )

So, while I hope they are down and out & go the way of the Whigs... I'm not going to count them out until I see either evangelicals leaving to form their own party or the neocons leaving. And, if we have them down this time, we really need to kick them when their down... and then kick them again a few more times just to make sure they stay down.

3. Never said they'd reach across the aisle from good thoughts.
From Day One of this nightmare, I've said the only ones who can get him out are his own.

But NOW I say that Georgie will not do a Nixon. He won't let a bunch of old men tell him to leave quietly. George has a majority on the Supreme Court. I think George is going to gamble that his Court will uphold him.

It's going to be the OK Corral.

4. There are doubts that the SCOTUS will rescue Bush.....
... if there is one thing ideologues understand, it is being shut out of power.

Roberts and Alito understand this.

It is all about looking down the road at what comes next. Plus, the entire Republican Party will be against Bush in this scenario, regardless of what they say to the contrary in public.

I agree with you that Bush is unlikely to leave quietly, but leave he will once the Repubs in Congress decide he has to go.

6. What will be done about Cheney, though. He's more culpable than that
ass who claims to be P-Resident.

We are in a fix. Both have to go...But there's no way the Repugs will allow that to happen. It would be too crushing a blow. And, we sure don't want Cheney left in there. Bush isn't going to replace Cheney and Cheney isn't going voluntarily....

There are more than Repugs keeping those two in power. There are several powerful Think Tanks and Lobbies. What about them?

9. I see Cheney leaving office first, most likely replaced by McCain...
It is the only way to avoid a President Pelosi.

That way when Bush exits, the newly appointed VP(just like Gerald Ford) will assume the office of the President for the remainder of Bush's term.

I was surprised at Scarborough's opening for his show tonight. It said that an intervention moment was coming and some republicans would be paying bush a visit, telling him his war is over.

10. Another poster said Buchanan, Scarborough and Craig Crawford were laughing
about Israel or us bombing Iran saying it was a "done deal" and everyone would be saluting Bush as a hero. :

I heard Matthews say that Hillary was playing it very safe because she could be right that Bush's Iraq plan will work and that everyone who opposed the war would be left with the wrong position.

I missed Scarborough...so I don't know what to believe.

13. clarify, please
I'm not sure I understand this:

I heard Matthews say that Hillary was playing it very safe because she could be right that Bush's Iraq plan will work and that everyone who opposed the war would be left with the wrong position.

Has Hillary come out and said she thinks bush's plan will work?

Or are you just referring to her position where she voted for the Iraq war and has not yet said she was wrong?

29. Hillary always hedges her bets. She has a knack for being
on all sides of an issue and thus does not stand for anything at all, except maybe Hillary. Hillary and McCain are flip sides of a coin.

34. I called her office during the IWR debates. Hated her staffers and attitude
My senators were Macaca Allen and John Warner. I called them as well but didn't expect anything but BS.

Hillary Clinton is about as useless as any Democrat can be. She's perceived to be ultra-liberal by many of the RW voters but is actually a DLC/Dino centrist. She's slightly less fascist than Joe Lieberman.

The only purpose of the plan is to buy time so that Bush can make it through his term.

17. that's not what I heard
I watched a good part of scumborough tonight, have been recently just because I enjoy hearing him beat Bush on the head. All I heard him and Buchanan talking about was that the dems will not be in a position to stop an Iran invasion because it would leave America believing the dems don't support the troops. That once the troops get in, the dems will not be able to leave them without funds. Same thing with the "surge", that it would be bad if the dems did not "support the troops" by pulling funds and leaving them hanging.

I didn't hear anything about Hillary but I was interuppted by a phone call.

The republicans are caught in a trap of their own making and the only way to get away is to chew off the bush arm of their party.

Otherwise they are dead meat.

14. I don't think they will make him resign, I think they will tell him to back off
the question is, will he do it? Even if it means destroying his party? And if he doesn't, the GOP will be in open revolt and impeachment is the only answer.

Then what do they do with Cheney if he won't back down?
