http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/16470168.htmNancy Pelosi, in her first public appearance as House speaker outside the nation's capital, sternly warned President Bush on Monday that Congress intends to exercise its power of oversight as he moves ahead with plans to expand the number of troops in Iraq.
Pelosi blamed the president's stance on the war for damaging the country's standing among other nations and impeding progress on other important issues, including global warming and stopping the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
``We're saying to the president: `What you are doing has first and foremost cost now over 3,000 lives,' '' in addition to costing the nation its ``reputation in the world in order for us to get a job done,'' said Pelosi, who supports U.S. troop withdrawal and better training for Iraqis.
``Our troops are being overused in Iraq,'' Pelosi said.
