U.N.: 34,352 Iraqi civilians killed in '06

BAGHDAD, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The United Nations said Tuesday 34,452 Iraqi civilians were killed by violence in Iraq in 2006, three times as many as reported by Iraq's Interior Ministry.

Human rights envoy Gianni Magazzeni also said in his report more than 36,000 people were injured in the fighting, largely between Sunni and Shiite Muslim militants.

Magazzeni said the figures were compiled from data collected by the Health Ministry, hospitals, mortuaries and other agencies, the BBC reported.

2. That's more than 10 civilians for every one of our soldiers killed.

3. The Lancet Study guesses 650,000 over three years...
Looks to me like a whole lot more people are dying than are being reported to "the Health Ministry, hospitals, mortuaries and other agencies."

5. And what won't the US admit? Most of them were 'insurgents'
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 04:47 PM by Rex
that lived in Iraq and were pissed off at US occupation. What makes one an insurgent? Anyone not willing to go along with the Iraqi government that is totally dependant on the US and will remain that way for years to come.

Want to stop the death toll in Iraq? Pull the troops out. Now. Not tomorrow. Actually, it might be too late to stop the death toll, regardless of who is 'control' of Baghdad. Or Iraq for that matter.
