List some black folk you do think have the experience and support them for a run.

We need a black person on the ticket for 2k8. IT. IS. TIME.

1. Charlie Rangel
I adore Charlie Rangel. Seriously, I don't think he's interested.

But I think the whole experience thing is kind of silly. What kind of experience did Clinton have? Plenty at the state level, but none at the federal level.

Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 11:10 AM by wryter2000
Would have been Barbara Jordan and Charlie Rangel. In part because I'd love to see African American faces in charge and explode a few racist heads , but mostly because the two of them were/are so utterly awesome. Jordan the intellectual, Rangel the down-to-earth guy who takes BS from no one. Jordan the southerner, Rangel the New Yorker.

I wish we had Barbara Jordan now. Imagine what she'd have to say about the current bunch of crooks. She carried a copy of the Constitution in her purse.

3. Experience doesn't matter.
If it did, Clinton would have been horrible, and Bush I would have been great.

6. That makes no sense at all.
Clinton (I'm no fan of his either) was the Governor in a strong Governor State, Texas has one of the weakest Governors offices in the country. Clinton left his state in better shape than when he started, Arbusto left his much worse and insolvent.

OTOH, there is no position that can prepare one for the Presidency, according to those that have been there.

15. it is not black and white
Obama is not a good candidate because his is black. We don't need a black candidate any more than we need a white candidate or a yellow candidate or a male candidate or a female candidate. We need a candidate who can 1) win and 2) be a good president. Obama can do both. He has great personal appeal. I don't think experience is gonna be a factor. Any more than it was with Clinton....or with Lincoln, another candidate from Illinois with only 2 years in Congress and some time in the State House....

:loveya:

BUT ... I don't want ANYONE on the ticket simply because it's "time for a black person" or it's "time for a woman" or it's "time for a non-Christian," etc. I want someone that I believe in. I want someone with intelligence, compassion, vision, rationality and good, old-fashioned common sense. :-)

18. Harry Belafonte.

In 1960, President John F. Kennedy named Belafonte as cultural advisor to the Peace Corps. Belafonte was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and one of Martin Luther King's confidants. During the McCarthy era he was blacklisted for his Civil Rights work. He bailed Martin Luther King out of the Birmingham City Jail and raised thousands of dollars to release other imprisoned Civil Rights protesters. He financed the Freedom Rides, supported voter-registration drives, and helped to organize the March on Washington in 1963.

Belafonte speaking at the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington, D.C

In 1968, Belafonte appeared on a Petula Clark primetime television special on NBC. In the middle of a song, Clark smiled and briefly touched Belafonte's arm, which made the show's sponsor, Plymouth Motors, nervous. Plymouth wanted to cut out the segment, but Clark, who had ownership of the special, told NBC that the performance would be shown intact or she would not allow the special to be aired. American newspapers published articles reporting the controversy and, when the special aired, it grabbed high viewing figures. Clark's gesture marked the first time in which two people of different races made friendly bodily contact on US television.

>>>snip

Belafonte used the quote to characterize both former and current United States Secretary of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, both African-Americans, as "house slaves" for serving in Bush's cabinet, which he implied was racist, and for their refusal to stand against the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He was implying that, by going along with Bush's plans, the two were only serving the cause of their "master". He repeated the charge on an interview on Larry King Live. Powell and Rice both responded, with Powell calling the remarks "unfortunate" <16> and Rice saying "I don't need Harry Belafonte to tell me what it means to be black." <17> The comment was brought back up in an interview with Amy Goodman for Democracy Now! in 2006. <4>

In August 2005, Belafonte made a similar analogy by saying "Hitler had a lot of Jews high up in the hierarchy of the Third Reich."<5> Belafonte's statement was demonstrably false.

In January of 2006, Belafonte led a delegation of activists including actor Danny Glover and activist/professor Cornel West which met with President of Venezuela Hugo Chávez. Belafonte was quoted as saying, "No matter what the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world, George W. Bush says, we're here to tell you: Not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of the American people... support your revolution."<6>

20. I think there are more important factors besides experience
I want a candidate with a strong positive vision for America, the ability to articulate it, and the ability to inspire all of us to follow it. After that, he/she needs to get wise advisers and have the good sense to listen to them.

23. I don't think he lacks experience, I'm worried he'll play the losing DLC strategy...
...and pander to the "moderate" right-wing corporatists. I want him to convince me otherwise.

Also, I don't think simply being a Black man is enough of a reason to elect him. I wouldn't elect Keyes for that reason, he's a fucking lunatic.
