No.2 al-Qaida in Iraq leader arrested 9/4/06 He's responsible for the civil war!
I found a newspaper from Sept 4, 2006 with this front page article and had to laugh. I do not remember any of this #2's names. How about you? He is the one responsible for the civil war.

Authorities on Sunday announced the capture of al-Qaida in Iraq's No. 2 leader, accusing him of "brutal and merciless" terrorism operations including the bombing of a Shiite shrine that touched off the sectarian bloodletting pushing Iraq toward civil war.

Itaq's national security adviser said Hamed Jumaa Farid al-Saeedi, known as Abu Humam or Abu Rana, was arrested a few days ago as he hid in a residental building southwest of Baqouba.

(clip a bit about the killers of Abeer and her family)

The arrest of al-Saeedi has left al-Qaida in Iraq suffering a "Serious leadership crisis:, national security adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie said. "Our troops have dealt fatal and painful blows to this organization."

1. If he really did get that mosque blown up, he sure helped a lot.
May not have created the civil war, but he helped.

3. I agree that this did help escalate it, don't remember any particular #2s and
I guess that means that all that is going on is violence stemming from that. I was struck by the fact that 1 paper that fell behind a piece of furniture had a headline about #2 captured! Perhaps I should've saved them all.

2. There have been a dozen or so reports of the 'number 3' leader being captured
I guess they got bored and moved to number 2 at last.
