U.S. sailor in Bahrain kills herself

MANAMA, Bahrain — A female U.S. sailor was found dead here Tuesday after apparently committing suicide in her apartment near the base of the Navy’s 5th Fleet, a Navy spokesman said Tuesday.

Cmdr. Kevin Aandahl said the 28-year-old petty officer had been working on the Navy base in Manama’s Jufair section for about a year.

The sailor’s name and hometown were being withheld pending notification of her family, Aandahl said. He gave no details on the manner of death.

The sailor’s death was also reported as a suicide by the state-run Bahrain News Agency.

I know somebody who fits that description pretty closely. Why would you hear about it? They don't run stories about suicides routinely, and Bahrain's just a routine posting. You don't hear about suicides in Korea or Germany, either.
