ABC's of the LGBT Community
Original Post Here:
http://spidel.net/blog/?p=1005

Ok, the never ending acronym debate of the non-heterosexual world has again hit my inbox with a 30 minute e-conversation with cutting edge movers and shakers in this world about the politically and socially correct acronym of this important undeserved and often misrepresented community. Talking to a few younger staffers this morning in the office, it became clear that even folks working in the community often are not 100% up to snuff on the terminology for "family." Thus, I googled and searched the blogs to find out that the most official and academically branded acronym has not made it to the blogosphere. Thus, I had to type up a blog thread to brand this blog as the first.

The latest and greatest from the radical and the academic worlds of the non-hetero population is: LGBTQQIATS (AP*).

Try saying all of that in one breath.

Seriously however, it is long and at first glance some may chuckle at this ever-evolving acronymic-socio-political-correct-label. But each letter indeed represents a population and community of which or all impacted issues that need to be advocated for and community awareness/education needed.

Let me break this down: http://spidel.net/blog/?p=1005

1. Isn't it easier to just say "Non-Hetero Gender," or something to that effect?
Once an acronym goes beyond three or four letters, its acceptance by the general population decreases exponentially and is unlikely to be adopted beyond the community it refers to (and probably not by some of them as well).

3. It just seems like trying to represent every jellybean in the bag but orange.
Why not just say "Non-Orange Jellybeans?"

5. OK, I admit it - I am an orange jellybeanist.
But everyone's a little bit jellybeanist, right?

6. If 90%+ of your jellybeans are orange, that may be quite a useful category,
Depending on what you want to do with your jellybeans.
