A vote that will ask them if they want us there or not.

Snow said NO!

Helen asked why?

and then Snow became the smug punk ass asshole that he is.

7. So then he is admitting
that there is indeed a civil war in Iraq? Didn't they make a huge fuss over that terminology when NBC used it? And if it is a civil war that begs the question which side are are on and why are we fighting someone else's civil war?

9. He fails to mention that a foreign army did NOT invade the USA prior to the civil war.
Statements like this are just fodder for the ditto head idiots who support Bushco.

17. Further, he is defining
policy far beyond his official role. In effect he saying that the Iraqi people cannot vote to choose on this issue. The president has defined it as having the rightful representative government make that decision then vaguely let it slide until it becomes the task of "future presidents". Between Snow and Bush it is clear no Iraqi will be allowed to make that judgment in the slightest, that we don't intend to leave but stay in the mire that self-justifies our staying- in yet another off-handed giant contradiction to a pious Bush promise that we always knew was a bald lie.

12. We're we occupied by a foreign army at that time? Refresh my
memory, but it seems we were an independent nation by then. It seems that a vote to remove a foreign occupying army wouldn't have made much sense.

13. Hmm
I recall Lincoln having to run for re-election during the civil war. An election that ran pretty much as a for or against the war vote. I recall that he won. So much for another stupid republican analogy that doesn't work.

16. Eh? What does OUR civil war have to do with Iraq?
There was no occupying force in America, we hadn't been invaded, no foreign country was telling us how to run things and detaining/killing our people on the suspicion of being terrorists.

Snow, the poster boy of freeper bullshit.

10. You go, girl! My lte published in NY Times on this
Kudos to Helen for asking the question.

This was my letter to the editor on the subject published in the NY Times - 8/04:

To the Editor:

Re ''What About Iraq?,'' by Paul Krugman (column, Aug. 6):

One of the largest post-invasion mistakes of the Bush administration has been the failure to
estimate the ''nationalist resistance'' of the Iraqi people. President Bush simply lumps the
resistance movement into terrorism at large.

The same error was made in Vietnam; just substitute ''Communists'' for ''terrorists.''

Though the right-wing pundits screamed loud and long before the invasion of Iraq that ''it's
not about the oil,'' many of the Iraqi people, and for that matter the rest of the world, know
that oil is a huge element of this equation.

If we are really intent upon Iraq's becoming a democratic society, the first order
of ''business'' should be a national referendum to let the Iraqi people decide if American
troops should stay or leave. To say they are not ready to make such a decision is nothing short
of arrogance. Let the Iraqi people decide their own fate.

25. That was you?!
I read that letter out loud to my wife over breakfast.
Your letter sums up the best solution to our Iraq quagmire. Let the pople of Iraq decide.
Congratulations on getting this idea out there.

The fact that Bushco refuses to allow the people of Iraq to democratically chose their future is proof of a nefarious hidden agenda.

18. It's a brilliant question.
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 03:15 PM by Gregorian
And it's absolutely time to ask it.

But... Since this is about oil, and since we want oil...

Just ask yourself- Have I used oil today?

edit- Of course that doesn't excuse killing and invading countries. But it is a factor that many of us don't want to fully address. I just got back from a trip, moving my belongings to a new place. And I was fully distraught over having just witnessed the San Francisco bay area. And that was an outlying northernmost portion. Incredible! Traffic at 5am in a place where cars hardly existed ten years ago. Folks, we're in deep shit.

it made Snowjob tacitly admit that the US is the occupying force and Iraq is not a sovereign nation.

21. That is totally true.
And I edited my post because even though I bring up the oil issue, this thread is absolutely about putting the cards on the table.

Helen is a treasure. So are my parents. It's nice to see people their age who know the whole picture.
