In at least one sense, the quicksand that's Iraq is much like the tar pit that was Viet Nam. In both cases, the mentality of the political 'leadership' is akin the macho imbecile that plays chicken on the highway. We were supposedly attempting to 'prove' to the Soviet Union and China that we'd 'hang in there' and not blink first in Viet Nam, not matter how many lives were lost and how much it cost. (That this is insane - dysfunctional and codependent - should require no discussion.)
We're hearing exactly the same rationale espoused by the current crop of sanatorium refugees in the administration. "Osama bin Laden said we don't have the resolve! He predicted that we'd cut and run as soon as it got tough. We can't let him say he was right!" This is, almost literally, what I've heard from Cheney and other members of this cabal.
What kind of idiot holds his hand in a flame just to prove he can take the pain? When it's someone else's hand, it becomes criminal. What' particularly disturbing is that such insanity can even be articulated by these people without fear of men in white with nets. It speaks volumes to the mental illness in our body politic. Joe Public is so accustomed to this that it makes no impression.
It's gonna get worse before it gets better. Count on it.
