The biggest chunk of the tourist load was when the WH was decorated for the holidays. Now, they decorate it, and no one gets to see it save the odd dignitaries, the "elite" tours of favored donors, wounded service personnel and their families, and the ones who got passes from their reps. It used to be "full speed ahead" during those times, with tours whipping through to see the decorated rooms one after the next.

That's the SOLE reasoning behind the stupid Barney business, because people bitched that their tax dollars were going to decorate 'their house' that they couldn't even see...it's disgraceful. One thing ya gotta hand to Clinton, he'd tell them to keep the tours coming, especially during the summer when there was huge demand--he'd let them run them two hours or more after the normal ending hour--he INSISTED that they do it, that no one be turned away.

Helluva fellah...actually believed it was the People's House...such a concept.
