"Iran warns it's ready for nuke standoff"

THAT'S the headline this morning from an AP article, which of course makes it sound as though Iran has nuclear weapons and we're stuck in something like the Cuban Missile Crisis. Well, Iran does not have nukes and we are not pointing them at each other in some kind of "standoff". This is ridiculous. Here's the actual article:

"President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday that Iran was prepared for any possibility in the standoff with the West over its controversial nuclear activities.

"Today, with the grace of God, we have gone through the arduous passes and we are ready for anything in this path," state-run television quoted Ahmadinejad as saying Thursday..."

Anybody else hear the faint sound of a steady drumbeat in their head?

TEHRAN, Iran - Prices for vegetables have tripled in the past month, housing prices have
doubled since last summer — and as costs have gone up, so has Iranians' discontent with
hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his focus on confrontation with the West.

Ahmadinejad was elected last year on a populist agenda promising to bring oil revenues
to every family, eradicate poverty and tackle unemployment. Now he is facing increasingly
fierce criticism for his failure to meet those promises.

He is being challenged not only by reformers but by the conservatives who paved the way
for his stunning victory in 2005 presidential elections. Even conservatives say Ahmadinejad
has concentrated too much on fiery, anti-U.S. speeches and not enough on the economy
— and they have become more aggressive in calling him to account.

Ahmadinejad's government "has been strong on populist slogans but weak on achievement,"
said Khoshchehreh, who campaigned for Ahmadinejad during the election.

5. My reference was really to the misleading headline.

But regarding the Iranian's discontent...That may be true. But I can't help forgetting how we were all going to be greeted as liberators in the Iraq War. How the Iranians didn't want Saddam either. I guess what I am saying is that it smacks of another (even if it's slight) justification for military action.

Also this comment in the article you linked:

WTF? What's that supposed to mean? Is Ahmadinejad supposed to ignore Bush and the American military? The US Navy is at his door, his embassy was stormed, his people taken hostage -- uh, I meam in custody --Pershings are now to be deployed and Generals are leaking classified documents of nuclear attack scenarios. What's he suppose to do? Ignore them? Roll over and play dead?

I guess I just don't trust our press or our government on this topic.

6. Ahmadinejad's supporters just lost an election.

They came in last. Reformers and rival conservatives outpolled them.
Ahmadinejad ran for office promising jobs and economic reform.
He has not delivered. The Iranian Parliament just rebuked him
for touring Latin America while Iran is in an economic crisis
with Khameni's blessing.

The Iranian people don't need America's help to remove Ahmadinejad.
They elected him democratically and the can remove him the same way,
if the Iranian Parliament doesn't impeach him first. Nobody in Iran
is asking to be "liberated" by outsiders.

Ahmadinejad is not a good guy just because our right wing hates him.
He's a right-wing sonofabitch too.

10. Undoubtably.

I'm not supporting Ahmadinejad. I'm sure the guy is an ass. I'm critique-ing our press. I think headlines like "Iran Ready for Nuke Standoff" are misleading. I fear the Bush administration and how they may twist news from Iraq to support their war drums. That's all I'm saying.
