Medical marijuana clinics raided in L.A.
Federal raids reflect disparity with state law that allows prescription use

Updated: 8:49 a.m. ET Jan 18, 2007

Several people were detained, although no arrests were made after five dispensaries in West Hollywood and six others in Venice, Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley were searched Wednesday, said Sarah Pullen, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The raids highlighted a conflict between a California state law and the federal drug agency. California voters in 1996 approved the Compassionate Use Act, which makes marijuana available by prescription for medicinal uses. The DEA, which does not recognize California laws legalizing medical marijuana use, has recently increased its enforcement.

City officials in West Hollywood said they were surprised by the action, learning of the raid as it was happening. City spokeswoman Helen Goss said West Hollywood has a "long-standing commitment" to the use of medical marijuana for people suffering from illnesses like HIV and AIDS.

"Today's enforcement operations show that these establishments are nothing more than drug-trafficking organizations bringing criminal activities to our neighborhoods and drugs near our children and schools," said Ralph W. Partridge, head of the DEA in Los Angeles.

3. They raided all the San Diego dispenseries a few months ago.
A guy I know is still in jail. He cant make the $750,000.00 bail or bond. Now people have to buy off the streets from unsavory dealers again. This is mostly people that use it MEDICINALLY,like myself.

CA voted the law in by 70%! Now the feds and a few "anti-drug crusaders" are depriving people of the medicine they need to make it through the day.

5. A thread a couple of days ago mentioned that
Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 12:32 PM by juajen
in Alaska, you were allowed a certain amount for personal use, which amounts to decriminalization of under that amount. So, why aren't the Feds going after them? Is it the way the law is written, or the blue state vs. red state thingie? Anybody know?

Also, I believe I read a couple of months back, that in one of the Dakotas, they were raising hemp, which everybody knows is one hell of a crop, but, I thought, illegal.

9. True, but the Afghan opium/poppy money funds the CIA.
Medical Marijuana funds no-one other than small business owners, and likely hurts the pocketbook of big-pharma.

We cant have that, now can we?

12. Yes, both the CIA and their ancilliary organizations like Al Queda and the
ISI, (the Pakistani Intel Org) and their proxy terrorists throughout the world depend on that heroin to keep in business.

The DEA it seems relies more on the bogus threat of medical (and recreational) marajuana for their access to public funds.

8. Ralph W. Partridge - Praetorian Guard for the Fascist Police State
Ralph W. Partridge does not give a fuck about children and schools. His purpose is to see to it that human beings suffer and die in pain, and that only his wealthy slave masters can enjoy their slice of life.

13. Politically, it's stupid not to because there is widespread public support for a
rational drug policy.

Montanans voted about 2 to 1 in favor of medical marajuana. Got more votes than any statewide candidate got.
