DALLAS - A group of Methodist ministers from across the nation launched an online petition drive Thursday urging Southern Methodist University to stop trying to land George W. Bush's presidential library.

The petition, on a new Web site, http://www.protectsmu.org, says that "as United Methodists, we believe that the linking of his presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate."

"Methodists have a long history of social conscience, so questions about the conduct of this president are very concerning," said one of the petition's organizers, the Rev. Andrew J. Weaver of New York, who graduated from SMU's Perkins School of Theology

Baptised and confirmed at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in XXXXXX.

I find no joy in questioning a man's motives or reputation, but I find Mr. Bush's actions make a mockery of every value I learned growing up at Emmanuel.

At Emmanuel I learned to love my neighbor by worshipping with a congregation that was woven from many races, ages and income brackets. I learned tolerance by sharing our house of worship with a religion that was different from our own. I learned about social justice by witnessing the personal sacrifice (death by starvation) our pastor nearly made in protest of the Viet Nam war.

I do not know what is in Mr. Bush's heart but I find that his policies reflect a view that is not only willfully ignorant and cynical, but intentionally cruel and criminally unjust. Through his actions - inactions, even - we have seen torture advocated, our citizens left to drown because of their class and color, and an unprovoked war waged to line the pockets of a few.

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Thanks to Mr. Bush these last six years have been a bitter fruit, indeed.

Is this kind of tree worth the few pieces of silver offered to plant it?
