Another future for the United States?
I was reading another thread that described a perceived chasm of differences between the North and South on the United States in which was stated:

"There is a growing disgruntlement of the north with the southern states and the divide is growing to pre civil war status.
the north is growing sick of the south and it's ultra conservitism and it;s far evangelical religions. It's growing irritated with the south's rejection of technology and science, it's lack of environmental conscience and the economic disparity." - illinoisprogressive

This set me to thinking about another looming, albiet invisible, threat to our country and that is the elitist attempt to merge the United States, Mexico and Canada into a EU-style "community" called the North American Union. More can be learned about it http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=t&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2005-02,GGLD:en&q=%22north+american+union%22">here and http://news.google.com/news?sourceid=navclient&aq=%22north%20american%20union%22&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2005-02,GGLD:en&q=%22north+american+union%22&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wn">here and http://www.cfr.org/publication/8102/">here.

I wanted to say that the thought of possibly losing my US citizenship and living in a new nation operated by the powers that detroyed America is not going to fly at all. I swear to God, I'll go out in a blaze of glory in an effort to prevent a North American Union that includes remnants of our once-great nation. Series! Arthritis or not!

1. er, the eu proved to be a very good thing
i've often thought a north american union would be better than our current situation, where rich people can basically own slaves who are a threat of deportation away from ever being able to organize for fair pay or equal rights and who consequently pull down wages for everyone who isn't a rich slave owner

if we are de facto one nation w. mexico and/or canada it would be better to make it legal and provide for the common defense of our real borders

if health care were a universal right (as it is in the eu) then i think we could do a lot worse than have canadian style universal care

in the eu death penalty is illegal (as it is in mexico) -- many here would support this as a law for the entire continent

and so on

2. If we decide, democratically, to form an NAU, it will be great
If we are forced arbitrarily into such a union by the criminals who run the country now, it will be a disaster, just like everything they force on us. An NAU would practically end our immigration issue and hopefully would bring the standard of living in Mexico and the U.S. up to the Canadian standard.

7. that is my thought
a union could be a good thing or a bad thing, it's up to us to make it a good thing

i don't feel things can continue as they are, the current situation is pretty frankly untenable and inhumane

10. People have a pretty amazing tolerance for abuse from the system
It's unfathomable how far the citizens of this country, or any other country, for that matter, will let themselves by pushed before they push back. Excuse my cynicism, but I have little doubt that if there was such a Union formed on this Continent, it would follow the corporate-dominance, NAFTA-esque model.

4. Much of this idea of separation is not new. I remember in the 70s
there was talk about regional governments inside the USA because the needs, interests and beliefs of the USA differ so much according to region. I for one am very angry with the south for pushing their religions down our throats. I live in northern Minnesota and we have all these people come up here trying to tell us how to do things - they usually leave quickly when we show them how it is done.

As to USA/Canada/Mexico union I think that is big business and *ss trying to figure out how to bring cheap wages into the USA so they won't have to outsource so much.

One other thing is that the rest of the world is all uniting to protect themselves from globalization and other threats: Asia, Russia/EU, South/Latin America and that leaves us setting here with two very close neighbors. Canada will stick with EU and Mexico will join the other South American countries. That will leave us alone.

8. I would too, but
would then have to move 1831 miles. That's a drag. There has to be a better way.
