This Is How I Kept My Sanity

When my dad died in a war that was senseless.

I listened to the radio he had given me. It was a transistor radio!

Of course, every radio is now a transistor radio, because who uses tubes anymore other than people who use really, really good amps for their guitars?

I listened to music. Music fed my soul during a time of war and confusion and hurt.

I still do.

What do you listen to?

1. Yeah, music has kept me from going crazy as well.

And I listen to pretty much everything - and most, if not all of my collection, is what is referred to as being "left of center".

Music has saved me so many times I've lost track.

Blues, Folk, Zep, Cream, Dylan, Cash, Nelson, Kristofferson, Joplin, Prine, CSN&Y, Broadway, Soul, Gospel, Old C&W.

If it's got soul, I'm all over it.

4. Recently, it has been Phil Ochs

In fact, I just discovered him recently. (which is somewhat embarrassing) So, I listen to everything he wrote. He had guts and problems and a horrible death, but his writing was inspirational and he just about took a piece of everyone - the "liberals," the unions, the politicians, the government. For me, he says it all.

If we become as passionate as he, do we end up with a quite a story, too?

So, he presents a challenge to remain passionate but strong. Of all the "protest" singers, I think he was the strongest and most daring.

And a damned good one.

I can only listen to Ochs in small doses.

His voice is strong, but at the same time . . . one can hear that he was on the ragged edge of existience.

Is his writing a representation of a planet on the ragged edge of existence?

(maybe I should apologize for such a down participation into an otherwise up thread of how we get through this mess with music)

9. Railroad Earth, Spearhead, Dark Star Orchestra...

Spearhead really speaks to me at times...Reminds me that there are like-minded, sane, peaceful, and beautiful people in all this madness. :)
