I feel the same way about Kofi Annan as Bob the Angry Flower does

Annan was the best damned friend this country ever had. He supported America's ideals; he supported our coutnry's true cause in the world. Just about everything he did made us safer and made the world a little more to our liking. It's stunning that the most pro-American Secretary-General in UN history was treated like absolute shit by the wingers who've hijacked our country. To the extent that an unchecked Bush administration hasn't quite yet driven the whole world over the cliff into armageddon, you can thank Kofi Annan for keeping the world delicately duct-taped together. He didn't make a lot of splashy headlines, but he helped keep Bush's worst errors from ruining us.



This cartoon is exactly how I feel. America's best friend finished his hitch in office far too soon. We will never know how safe the UN has kept us from the harm our own government keeps trying to dump on our heads. At least I pray we'll never find out how much we need them.

Annan was a better friend to the US than Dubya will ever be. The problem for the US right-wingers is that they see the very existence of the UN as a threat to unchecked US global hedgemony. Why do we need the UN when the US-as-empire can take care of the world's needs? Or so they believe.
