DU Lawyers: Can You Explain Something To Me?
I'm not sure what it is called, but it was an early indicator that * was going to go to the hard right on federal judges (I think - or senators - Please forgive my ignorance). There was something about a pink slip/blue slip . The ABA was involved. It might have been around March 2001, and it broke a 50 year tradition. Sorry, that's about all I can remember. I this as a very significant early shot across the bow, so to speak.

2. Something about the ABA not vetting Supreme Court nominees, as had always been the case?
maybe?
does that ring any bells?

4. I'm not a lawyer, but here is something from the internet - I kinda
remembered something - couldn't make it come back. This is 2006, but it refers to the period you're speaking about, I think. Those who accuse other of flip-flopping, flop-flip.

Republicans are trumpeting the ABA’s rating of Judge Alito, pointing to it as a crucial qualification. However, The Constitution says that it’s the job of the US Senate to provide the advice and consent, not the ABA. So far, no one has questioned his reputation or temperament, which make up the bulk of the factors behind the ABA evaluation. In addition, the friendship between the ABA and Republicans is very recent. Not long ago, when the ABA was lukewarm on Bush judicial nominees, Republican senators and the right wing even went so far as to discard the judgment of the ABA, even going so far as to stop cooperating with the ABA in evaluating judges before their hearings.

Attorney General Gonzales ended traditional role of ABA in evaluating judges

5. I recall a tradition where a senator could veto a judicial choice for his state and
I thought that was called some sort of "_____ slip"
