Anyone notice the "Today's Military" ad campaign?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but seems to me that they've stepped it up a few notches.

"Parents, talk to your kids." "Make it a two-way conversation."

I guess they have to get the troops present for that big "surge". :(

1. Funny how the "parent" never actually talks...
...S/he might say something like "not while these warmongering shitheads are running things, you're not."

2. I've noticed that too
The propaganda... excuse me, recruitment videos... no, that's not right. Hi, Agent Mike! :hi: The public service announcements, yeah, that's right... the public service announcements are little more than a list of arguments a kid can use against his (it always seems to be a him, doesn't it?) parents' every objection.

So much for honoring the family.

3. So you think 19-20 year olds should basically continue to do what their
parents tell them? I'm not sure I understand this objection.

At any rate, watch some of the old recruiting films of the 40s and 50s and you'll see a lot of the same arguments.

8. Do what their parents tell them? No.
Respectfully listen to the concerns of their parents? Yes. You will notice that the boys respect their parents enough to talk to them; they haven't already signed up. If you are going to mention something like this to your folks before enlisting, shouldn't you be respectful enough to consider what your parents have to say rather than just deflect their (pitifully weak, in those commercials) objections?

7. They want the parents to go to the website
and "research" all of the great jobs and careers and how they'll make your slacker teen into a responsible member of society--provided they survive their enlistment. x(

5. This shows how out of touch with reality they are in DC. There are very, very

few parents in the U.S. who would encourage their kids to get their guts blown out or blinded or crippled.

6. I haven't seen the adds, but from the comments on this thread it sounds
like they are just trying to get parents to *stop* arguing with kids who want to join.

The message is more like - hey if your kid wants to join, let them talk - stop telling them they should not join.
