Meet the newest member of the Skinner family... It's a baby boy!

Perhaps you've noticed that I haven't been around for the past week. Here is the reason:



His name is Lucas. He was born on January 12 (less than an hour before DU passed 100,000 user registrations).

At birth he was 8 pounds, 6 ounces; 20.5 inches; with lots and lots of dark brown hair. Hobbies include: Sleeping, eating, crying, and pooping.

Mother and baby are both doing great.

I haven't been on DU at all for more than a week, and I haven't checked my email or private messages. I'll be on a sort of semi-parental leave for a while, during which time I'll be checking in and talking to the other admins, but I'm not going to be available full time. I'm going to try to get through my backlog of messages over the next few days. If you have a problem that needs admin attention, you'd probably be better off talking to EarlG or Elad instead of me.

230. My God What A Beautiful Baby! There's No Greater Reward Than Fatherhood. Here's Some Info You Need:

Firstly, I encourage you with as much heart as I can, to feel free to PM me with any questions/concerns or otherwise that will arise in the coming weeks. I spent countless hours researching and educating myself on a plethora of newborn topics and there are many common things that are bound to pop up that as new parents you may not have heard, and I'd be more than willing to provide own recently learned fatherly advice when necessary. Trust me, there will be several times you will need it LOL

But I also want to say a wholehearted congrats to you and your wife. The coming months will be some of the most beautiful you will ever experience and they will fly by, so take lots and lots and lots of pictures! I recommend a canon Powershot A620 or the like, but to each their own. :)

Some quick tips off the top of my head:

1. If Lucas is being formula fed, expect at times for him to all of a sudden vomit what seems to be a lot of formula. It is less than you think, and unless it is a bright yellow/green is probably something to not get too concerned about. It also might go somewhat far (projectile vomit) but unless it happens really frequently is probably nothing to be concerned about either.

2. Don't fear calling the pediatrician about concerns no matter how much you feel like you are puttin them out. That means no matter what hour of night it is. They expect it, they know the fears of new parents, and they became pediatricians fully knowing they would have to endure the frantic phone calls. Don't hesistate. It will give you and your wife many more reassuring hours of sleep afterwards.

3. If you don't know this already, newborns don't exactly come with solid day/night clocks. For the first couple of weeks, Lucas may very well spend the entire night awake and crying. DO NOT turn the lights on and DO NOT speak loudly or as if it is daytime. Speak quitely, if at all, and soothe him however you can. In no time at all his clock will be set and you will all of a sudden doze off just to wake up to the excitement of "Holy shit, it's 5 am! We slept straight through to 5 am!"

4. Help your wife. In any and all ways she needs it, offer it. She will be eternally grateful.

5. Get one of those 5 inch tall/4 inch wide/4 inch deep timex sound generating alarm clocks (you'll find them in sears). Set the sound to wind and leave it on overnight as your child sleeps. It did miracles for us.

6. Buy only upper quality. The money saved in the long run will be more than the extra money spent to begin with. This is namely for things such as strollers, carseats (Get the britax roundabout later on, after he's big enough to outgrow the carry along)and room monitors.

7. In the coming months it is almost definite that Lucas will catch a cold and get a fever. This fever will make his body emanate heat like you've never felt. Don't let it freak you out that much. Call the doctor, of course, but ease your mind. This is simply what infants with a high fever feel like. And if the fever gets high enough and he has a febrile seizure, just know they are harmless as well no matter how terrifying they are to witness. Probably won't have one, but wanted to pass that along anyway.

8. Always put him to sleep on his back and don't have any loose blankets or otherwise in the crib.

9. Find sleep at any opportunity. Do not waste this opportunity. Tell your wife the same thing. Lucas will not hold it against you if your house becomes messier than usual because you are using the cleaning time to sleep. I can't stress this enough: When he naps, YOU NAP!

That's it for starters, I'm sure there's plenty more.

I haven't seen this new edition, but I've given plenty of copies of the 1st and 2nd editions as gifts - have given 'em to pretty much every new parent in the family and close friends. I'm a pediatrician. I'm not currently practicing, but if I was, I'd seriously consider giving a copy of this book to every family in my practice. I know some pediatricians that have done just that. It's THAT useful. My own copy has gotten referred to quite frequently around here! The book is very practical - tells when to call the doc immediately, when you can wait 'til office hours, what to do to treat at home. Good practical step-by step instructions. Also covers behavioral and developmental issues, how to prevent accidents, all kinds of stuff. Even a section on preventing the spoiled child. Dr. Schmitt is pretty much the pediatric guru of parental advice, and very well-known and respected nationwide. His protocols for telephone triage are used in many pediatric offices, as well as a large book of handouts for parents called "Instructions for Pediatric Patients". He had two articles in the journal Contemporary Pediatrics about toilet training in Mar and April 2004 www.contemporarypediatrics.com that IMHO contained some of the best advice/info ever written on this subject.
