Sabrina Eaton Plain Dealer Bureau
Washington — You had to get up pretty early in the morning to keep up with Bob Ney, the former congressman from Ohio who will be sentenced today on corruption charges.
To match his drinking, you had to be up by 7:30 a.m.
Ney has blamed alcoholism for his aberrant behavior, which included taking bribes from a lobbyist, but the extent of his drinking became clear only Thursday, when pre-sentencing letters from former aides and friends were filed in U.S. District Court in Washington.

4. Well, if he were a POOR criminal, they would just
call him a 'drunk' instead of an 'alcoholic' and people would jump his shit even worse.

I hate the double standard we have for criminals in this country.

I wanna see these guys on the ground with spotlights being cuffed like they do the petty criminals on "Cops"....oh, and with no shirt and his wife screaming in the background

5. They have recovery programs in prison, he shouldn't dodge doing time
Ney’s lawyer, Mark Tuohey, submitted the letters to make the case that Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle should send Ney to a residential drug and alcohol abuse treatment program when she sentences him on charges of conspiracy and making false statements.

6. Ferchrissakes, we've finally recognized that drunk driving is no excuse
for the damage that can occur because someone willfully wasn't in control of their facilities. Perhaps it's time to institute harsh penalties for "legislating while under the influence".

7. My grandpa was an alcoholic...
and the president of a large national insurance company...he never took a bribe, propositioned a male or female subordinate, went on an anti-semetic tirade or went to prison for corruption...I'm so tired of everything being blamed on thier disease, it's thier moral compass that's the problem.

11. Yet if a young person gets caught with a joint, they lose college money?
Every time one of these professional thieves gets caught, they want to do rehab instead of time, arguing that the drug/alcohol/addiction-of-the-month made them do it. Yet if a young person gets caught with a joint, they don't talk rehab: They talk "tough", zero-tolerance, boot-camp lingo.

Hypocrites, all.

13. Another one for the Betty Ford "sanctuary from prosecution"
it must be good to have all that money. It buys a "get out of jail" card.

14. Fugg Ney
All I want to see is a nice photo of him being carted away. If he's in an orange jump suit, that'll make my day.
