PTC Calls Fox Apology “Dubious”
Apology is Hypocritical to Fox Lawsuit Demanding Right to Air ‘F-word’
LOS ANGELES (January 18, 2007) – The Parents Television Council™ responded to reports that Fox apologized for airing the “f-word,” which was clearly displayed on a fan’s t-shirt during the broadcast of the NFL playoff game between the New Orleans Saints and the Philadelphia Eagles.
“How can families take the Fox apology seriously when (1) they are suing in Federal Court demanding the ‘right’ to air the F-word when children are in the audience, (2) they could have taken simple steps to ensure such material does not air but they refuse to do so,” asked Tim Winter, president of the PTC™.
“With all the production crew eyes focused on television monitors, it would be impossible for such an explicit camera shot to hit the airwaves for such a lengthy period of time without an intent to do so. And Fox admitted that the indecent shot was not broadcast live.
“Perhaps Fox feels that the mere filing of a lawsuit gets them off the hook from obeying broadcast decency law. Apologies are not enough. Broadcasters need to take affirmative measures to protect children and families. And the FCC needs to rule on the complaints that have been filed so far – and hand down a stiff penalty to Fox for breaking the law.
“The FCC needs to address this complaint promptly. It simply cannot ignore its obligation to enforce the law while waiting for an outcome on the pending litigation. There are literally hundreds of thousands of indecency complaints already awaiting adjudication by the FCC, and this instance just adds to that list.”
