I'm almost in TEARS with anger. I'm about to fuckin LOSE IT.

I have my card with me so I don't know how it happened really.

9. I'm sorry this happened to you.
I'm so surprise, your bank didn't put freezed on your account when they notice something wasn't right. My bank has security in place, when something is being charge from over sea they put freeze on account over $200.00 and contact the owner to be sure, charge is done by the account holder.

12. Yes, likeiest culprits are database theft or an inside job in a store
either copying numbers or palming one of the carbons.

Since it's happening internationally, I'd guess the former.

I have 3 debit cards. I only use one and keep only enough in that account to cover purchases plus a small overdraft cushion. Because this stuff will probably happen more and more, I'm glad I can afford a "junk" account to limit my liability that way.

5. INTERNATIONAL - oh man that sucks
it's hard enough to set things right when it's all inside the US, but when the thief goes out of the country it's nearly impossible to ever make it right.

I REALLY feel for you.

6. Same thing happened to my friend except his inattentiveness
cost him. He didn't check with the bank that issued the debit card when there were unexplained charges on the monthly statement. When it reached over $5,000.00, he went to the bank. They wouldn't write off the charges, so he had to eat it and they gave him a new card. A year later, same thing happened. He complained again to the bank. Turned out a bank employee took his debit card number and half a dozen other customers' debit cards and went shopping.

If you report to the bank right away unusual charges, you're responsible for only $50.00.

7. I hope you can find a way to get them for this!

And if it turns out that they got the information from the TJ Max security breach, I hope you can sue them over this.

11. I went through something very similar...
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 04:29 PM by Neecy
Several years ago my debit card was lifted from an online transaction as well (I'm certain it was amazon.com after they were hacked) and I was relatively lucky - I checked my online account balance the day they were going crazy with my card, saw the illegal transactions and immediately called the bank and cancelled the card.

They did something similar - they laundered it through an offshore company and it was an absolute nightmare getting it resolved. Finally Wells Fargo resolved the situation, but it took about six weeks and lots of angry phone calls.

I'll never use my debit card online again - the funds come from your checking/savings account and you're out the money until it gets resolved. With a credit card at least you aren't out the cash until the disputed transaction is resolved. Lesson learned.

PM me if you start getting the runaround - been there, done that, and maybe what I went through can help you.

13. Thank you so much. Why is it that we have to make ANGRY phone calls
What about this don't the bank people understand.

I just told a lady to day that all the people they have working the phone in their disputes area are idots. All they did was dismiss me.

Get this. I called Thursday last week. I asked the csr rep in disputes if I could get a status on my disputes in process. He said well when did you send it in I said on Tuesday...he said it is pending. I said well don't you want my name. You didn't even ask me for my account number. He started laughing and I went off on his ass.

Can you believe that shit? Where are they hiring these people from...prison?

thanks so much. I will be PMing you because I am to fed up.

BTW I did make a purchase from Amazon in the days before my number was lifted.

14. I don't know, but it sucks
They only got $700 from me before I cancelled my card, but still that's money you don't want to have missing from your bank account for six weeks.

What's worse is that I felt like someone had stuck a gun in my face and stolen $700 cash from me, but NO ONE has any empathy for that. I was fucking robbed and you wouldn't believe how I got passed around from person to person like a joint. Well, I guess you would believe it because it sounds like you're going through the same shit. I got progressively angrier as the weeks passed because obviously it was MY problem that some hacking scumbag had gotten his/her filthy criminal paws on my debit card using a supposedly 'safe' site. I know it was amazon.com - that's the only site I ever used that card on, and other than that it was always in my wallet.

Vent all you need to - and believe me, you'll need to.

Knowing something like this could be a nightmare, I bought the protection plus that one of my credit card companies offered me. They protect all of my cards, including my debit card. I just call them and they fix it for me. Maybe one of your credit card companies offers it for the future?
