Attention: Company holding 40 MILLION credit card records has been hacked.
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 04:49 PM by Hoping4Change
TJX which operates companies such as Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Homsense had its computer network hacked in mid-December 2006. The network that was hacked stores everything from "credit and debit card transactions, to customer merchandise returns, to, for some reason, certain customers' driver's-license data."

According to The Wall Street Journal the company holds more than 40 million customer credit card records.

Some speculate the company withheld this information so as not to affect Christmas sales. TJX is not releasing the number of people who have had their information stolen so if you have shopped at any of its stores it is important to closely monitor credit card statements.

2. That's just horrible what happened to you.
It's getting worse. We may have to go back to paying cash for everything. One of my sister's shop at TJMax, I'll have to ask her if she made a transaction during the holidays.

5. If someone steals your card #, you're only liable for $50, if anything.
Worth remembering.

I don't believe that debit card fraud has the same protection.

7. My understanding is that debit cards aren't protected.
Credit cards are, but if they take money out of your account with a debit card it's gone.

9. I think you are mistaken.
My debit card is issued by my local CU through Visa and although it takes a bit more paperwork and legwork to resolve the issue, they are also protected from fraud. :)

But YMMV.

11. I had checks stolen once upon a time, and I was able to recover the $
It may depend on the bank; but you may be right.

Sounds like a good argument to pay online w/ a credit and not a debit card, either way.

10. It does if it's also a Visa card
Had mine hacked 2 years ago. Several small charges that I caught immediately. Didn't lose any money.
