Unmanned Aircraft To Patrol Central Florida City
Unmanned Aircraft To Patrol Central Florida City
Plane Expected To Arrive In February

PALM BAY, Fla. -- A Central Florida police department will likely be the first in the state to use an unmanned aircraft as a crime-fighting tool.

Palm Bay police expect to be the first department in Florida to use a small, unmanned aircraft to help track fleeing suspects, monitor traffic or help search for missing persons. It could also be used to monitor suspected drug houses and hunt for hot spots in wildfires, among other uses.

The eight-pound plane with kite-like wings should arrive next month, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

The aircraft can transmit video and other data to a portable ground station monitored by police, according to the report.

1. Is Florida the state
where you can shoot someone if you feel threatened? Somehow I just don't see this thingy working, moving target and all.

6. Not exactly
At least not as you've described it. All that law did was remove the duty to retreat in the face of a threat. You can only use force if you reasonably believe it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm.

2. Palm Bay is a seriously f'd up place -- lots of defense contactors
this one -- cyber defense systems -- is located on the other coast in St. Pete.

after hurrican andrew a lot of south floridians moved up to PB b/c of the cheap land and housing. there's an attitude that EVERYONE in palm bay is a gangsta. it's such crap. it's a perfectly normal florida suburb... except for all the defense contractors.

4. Palm Bay
Palm Bay is near Melbourne, FL, which is home to the Harris Corp., part of the military-industrial complex.

I assume the remote spy-plane has proved its worth from monitoring cities in Iraq, so they (the military) have convinced the local civilian police the advantages of using it here.

It's possible that spy satellites have some disadvantages in monitoring local civilian populations, perhaps they aren't as reliable as they claim, spy-plane drones may be more cost-effective and reliable over the long run.

I'm sure they're using it for a lot more things than they are publically acknowledging, we live in a bona-fide national security state, so government is operating more and more in the shadows.

5. I actually like it, but...
We need to know that this technology is in the hands of benevolent people. These days it's hard to tell the difference.

They are advertising Hunter/Killer types known as "Dominators"
to replace the Predator drones. They operate independently
of manual control, and move in packs. They can be programmed
for "area denial" by killing anything that moves.

i don't understand why we would not be getting such technology here in the greater new orleans area first where could certainly be put to good use looking for fires in the many abandoned houses in the area

We've always been at war with Eurasia.

Sounds terribly Orwellian if you ask me.

12. Not goring to happen
The FAA will not allow those kind of UAVs to operate in civilian airspace. Other departments have tried and found that out.
