Help keep Mallard Fillmore out of the Philadelphia Inquirer
Like everyone else in the country, we recently lost 2 cartoons because the authors retired: Boondocks and Fox Trot (both sorely missed)

The paper is looking for replacements, and auditioning cartoons for those 2 spots. Today's runoff is between the innocuous "Pajama Diaries" ("Kathy" for the soccer-mom set) and the odious "Mallard Fillmore".

You KNOW all the wingnuts will be voting in force for that humorless f$#king duck - the one that was BEGGING people not to vote in the last election..

If you can dial for free this weekend, please call 215-854-2312 to vote for "Pajama Diaries" and keep that serial drunk-driver from spewing his bile in our hometown paper!

1. Glad you posted this...
I will call...I had been putting it off, but that Mallard Fillmore is so unfunnily obnoxious that it is unreadable. Bad enough to have B.C., we don't need that. Also I'm going to e-mail someone I know on the Editorial Board - what's left of the Inky deserves better...

2. Count me in. I too support censoring the free press when they don't toe the line.
We MUST keep our newspapers ideologically pure! Conservative voices must be stomped out and eliminated at all costs. To hell with the Constitution. Bill of Rights be damned! They are, as Bush pointed out, just pieces of paper, and our ideology is bigger than any mere piece of paper.

3. This isn't censorship.
This is having people choose between two comic strips.

If they had room for both and refused to run one based on ideaology, then it would be censorship. This is little more than a popularity contest.

10. If it were funny, I'd grin and bear it
Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 06:08 PM by Patiod
but it's not funny - it's crap

There are some right-wing editorial cartoonists that make good points, and I might not like the points, but I appreciate the jabs as being funny and the authors as being talented.

Running a week of cartoons that basically just say "don't vote" right before the election - not funny, and kind of creepy. "Mallard Fillmore" is almost never humorous.

I don't see that voting against crap is censorship.

4. Mallard Fillmore is not merely obnoxious. The so-called
cartoonist is as ignorant as any rightwingnut redneck. Unreal. The leaps of logic. The speciousness. And the in-your-face wrongheadedness. It's so knee-deep in it all that it epitomizes what is rightwingnut redneck.

It may merely be that he fell asleep while attempting a formal education or perchance never graduated high school. Whatever it may be, the cartoonist has found his niche during this the heyday of those he epitomizes -- rightwingnut rednecks.

6. I didn't know Fox Trot nor Boondocks was being retired
Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 01:49 PM by JohnnyRingo
Though My local doesn't run Boondocks, I'll really miss Fox Trot.

My paper does however, publish Mallard Fillmore.
By all means, do everything in your power to influence selection of anything else....anything.

Even personal politix aside, the man is a hack artist who obviously spends too much time trying to render caricature likenesses, then runs them over and over as if it was a badge of accomplishment.

Of course most of his Democratic models appear as a combination of asylum escapee and child molester, but even that aside, he runs such an annoyingly long lead time that nothing is any longer news worthy. History books are written faster.

He cracked on the Patrick Kennedy car accident almost six weeks after the fact, and even then he managed only one of his stock drawings of his Uncle Ted.

This past week's strip covered the college bowl games, written as though they were still in progress.
Whatta Moran

On edit:
Why doesn't anyone sue him for that plagerized duck? Sufferin' Succotash!

8. Fox Trot will be
missed. My papers don't carry Mallard Fillmore. DU is the only place I have seen it mentioned.

9. "Fox Trot" was dropped from the Chicago Tribune.
I didn't know Bill Amend (that's the cartoonist's name, right?) was retiring it. That is a real shame...I liked it a lot.

He said that churning out 365 strips a year was too much, but that he could handle 52. His last daily strips were the last week of 2006

12. Thanks for the information
I see his point. "Fox Trot" is consistently good. I wondered how he was able to maintain that kind of quality every day.

7. Apparently being the world's worst comic strip isn't enough to keep it out
Of course, it's an easy strick to take jabs at, like this one.
