Evidence emerging that Pakistani Intelligence Agencies are supporting Taliban

The most explosive question about the Taliban resurgence here along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan is this: Have Pakistani intelligence agencies been promoting the Islamic insurgency?

The government of Pakistan vehemently rejects the allegation and insists that it is fully committed to help American and NATO forces prevail against the Taliban militants who were driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001.

Western diplomats in both countries and Pakistani opposition figures say that Pakistani intelligence agencies — in particular the powerful Inter-Services Intelligence and Military Intelligence — have been supporting a Taliban restoration, motivated not only by Islamic fervor but also by a longstanding view that the jihadist movement allows them to assert greater influence on Pakistan’s vulnerable western flank.

More than two weeks of reporting along this frontier, including dozens of interviews with residents on each side of the porous border, leaves little doubt that Quetta is an important base for the Taliban, and found many signs that Pakistani authorities are encouraging the insurgents, if not sponsoring them.

Where the hell has the NYT been for the past several years? It was proven YEARS ago that the head of Pakistan's ISI, General Ahmed, paid Atta $100 grand just weeks before 911. And guess where General Ahmed was on 911...he was in DC visiting members of the House & Senate Intel Committees. Why was he allowed to QUIETLY resign when his connection to Al Qaeda was discovered?

ISI personell? I saw an article about a year ago that the govt distanced themselves with that little loophole.

Just saying, they no longer represent the official position of the Paki govt.

I started tracking them as they were coming in-it may be cover and deception, it may be disinfo, but there were "incidents reported" running the gamut from attempted kidnapping of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission/PAEC employees in an area where "high grade uranium" was "discovered" to rumors of Osama bin Laden being in Pakistan to the breech of a cease fire between India and Pakistan to air and ground attacks to...well here's the thread-there's a bit of history thrown in for good measure--Pakistan did indeed historically support the Taliban
