2. thanks for the kick, porphyrian... here's some powerful words by Gandhi...

on violence:
"What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy? It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence. I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent. Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. I cannot teach you violence, as I do not myself believe in it. I can only teach you not to bow your heads before any one -- even at the cost of your life."

on patience:
"An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching. First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. One needs to be slow to form convictions, but once formed they must be defended against the heaviest odds." <JG note: indeed, let us not judge or act too quickly but is doing nothing an option?> "Indolence is a delightful but distressing state; we must be doing something to be happy. Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it. When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it--always. You must be the change you want to see in the world."

on courage:
"Better far than cowardice is killing and being killed in battle. A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. Adaptability is not imitation. An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it. Breach of promise is a base surrender of truth. It means power of resistance and assimilation. A 'No' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble. A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave."

on strength:
"Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love. They cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them. It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err. Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong. Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."

9. thanks bob! HERE IS A SOLEMN REQUEST FROM, understandinglife. please read...
"Ask Every Senator and Representative Stand in Silence, Together, from the moment Bush enters until after he departs his 2007 State of the Union Address next tuesday."

Bob (understandinglife) also writes:

"Similarly, I request that every American citizen Stand in Silence, Together for the duration of SOTU 2007.

The request is made to indicate to all those whom have died needlessly since March, 2003, that they are more than remembered, they are honored and mourned, collectively, by America.

The request is made to indicate to all those whom have been maimed needlessly since March, 2003, that they are more than remembered, they are honored and informed by America that they will receive priority care.

The request is made to indicate to all those families who have suffered the extraordinary pain of the loss or of the harm of one whom they love that America will strive to comfort them, meaningfully, and, most importantly will commit to never again causing needless loss and suffering to the parents and the children and the relatives of those who honorably serve.

The request is made to indicate to the entire world that “We the People …” have the courage to apologize to humanity for the colossal crimes of Bush, Cheney and their neoconster minions and corporate enablers.

The request is made to provide each of us a moment of collective focus on what we now must do to rectify and prevent any future action by Our Government even remotely comparable to the horrors of the past six years.

It Is Our Responsibility, my fellow Americans, and by Standing in Silence, Together during SOTU’07 we can reinstate our solidarity of conscience and set a precedence for what the message that must be passed from generation to generation in order for America to be all that its founding vision, and all that those whom have dedicated their lives, will emerge from the darkness Bush has cast, and persist in the light of truth and lawful conduct."

Thank you,
Bob

Bush Getting 2nd Chance to Defend Plan

By DEB RIECHMANN
The Associated Press
Saturday, January 20, 2007; 9:17 PM

Bush is expected to strike a conciliatory tone on some domestic issues where he believes he can work with the first Democratic Congress in 12 years. On Iraq, he is expected to stand firm.

The nationally televised speech typically offers great political theater. This year, however, it comes just 13 days after the president's prime-time announcement of his decision to send 21,500 more U.S. troops to Iraq.

Since then, Capitol Hill _ the forum for the State of the Union address _ has grown more hostile.

Democratic support is building around a nonbinding resolution opposing Bush's plan for more troops. Some Republicans already critical of the White House's Iraq policy have embraced the idea and others are looking for ways to sign on.
