LBJ: George (H.W.) Bush is a very progressive Republican...
I shit you not.

He also thought Ronald Reagan was a flash in the pan. Very interesting article follows:

LBJ Phones It In
Sunday, January 21, 2007; Page B04

A Texas ranch dweller turned president, reeling from midterm election losses and managing an unpopular war. Not George W. Bush in 2007 but Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966. The conversations below, transcribed and excerpted from Johnson telephone recordings released late last year by the LBJ library in Austin, show the president mulling a difficult midterm season, grappling with budget woes and hoping that a new congressman from Texas -- George H.W. Bush -- might be as moderate a Republican as some had promised him.-- Rachel Dry

1. IMO George H.W. Bush is intelligent. Also marginally tolerable as President
Edited on Sun Jan-21-07 03:20 PM by ShortnFiery
because he did not embrace the PNAC Neo-Conservative Ideology.

He was an old type SPOOK, not a wanna be conquerer.

2. One of the things his son has done
is make Dad look really good.

4. Take a trip over to Lerkfish's journal sometime...
if you haven't already.

Poppy Bush is thick as thieves with Rev. Moon and the Saudi Royal Family, among other very shady characters. He may not be a "conquerer" but he surely is a manipulator, and his involvement in Iran Contra is infamous.

Those things alone made him a pretty intolerable President for me, but in the scheme of things, relatively more tolerable than his son.

6. Point Taken. :-)
Because we have The Worst President EVER still ruling our Nation, I've compromised my principles on "tolerable." No, George H.W. Bush is corrupt but I'm even so desperate I have moments of nostalgia toward old NIXON. :( Compared to the abject failure we have now, almost anyone, save for Darth Cheney (who is really pulling the strings), seems marginally tolerable.

However, your points are well taken. I often envision someone like Al Gore serving as our future President. Hey, I can dream can't I? ;) :hi:

8. Very sad isn't it...
we've lowered the bar so much, we can think wistfully of Ronnie Reagan and H.W. Bush. ;(

3. He was, until he flip-flopped on everything to be RR's VP.
I was in fifth grade at the time, but that's how I understand it.

5. Didn't he run in the 1980 primary as an Independent, not as a
Republican? Am I not remembering correctly?

10. I think you're thinking of John Anderson
Bush and Anderson both ran against Reagan in the primary. After Reagan won, Anderson went Independent, while Bush became Reagan's running-mate (argh!)

13. Lerkfish is family...
...like all DUers, Virginia Dare!

Your OP brings up some interesting questions:

1. What was the relationship between Poppy and LBJ?
2. Did they work together in the coup d'etat of November 22, 1963?
3. If they both represent "progressive" politics, why are they both warmongers of historic proportion?

I think people are waking up to the reality that the most disturbing parts of our nation's history over the past 43 years result from public policies of the nation's Secret Government, the War Party.
