If Gore Had Chosen {???} As His Running Mate in 2000, FL Wouldn't Have Mattered...
Edited on Sun Jan-21-07 04:54 PM by CorpGovActivist
... if you accept the proposition that Gore's choice of running mate would have made a decisive difference, then the question becomes: who - among those not likely to run for the top of the ticket in '08 - has a real chance of making a real difference as the Veep nominee, this go-around?

For my part, I offer two possibilities:

1. Former VA Governor Mark Warner; and
2. Senator Jay Rockefeller.

I'm darn curious to hear others' ideas for strong Veep nominees, with a focus on non-candidates for the top of the ticket.

1. One problem...
Warner wasn't elected VA Governor until 2001. Back in 2000, he was merely a defeated Senatorial candidate (ran against JOHN Warner in 1996 and lost) who was worth millions from making money in the cell phone industry.

2. No, I Mean for This Go-Around
IF you accept the proposition that Gore's choice in '00 could have made a decisive difference,

THEN - operating on that same premise for '08 - who could make a decisive difference this go-around.

My bad for not making that more clear.

3. Well, I don't accept the fact
that Lieberman had anything to do with it. The Rethugs wanted to steal the election, so they did.. it didn't matter who was gonna be VP. Gore did win the popular vote, so most Americans didn't seem to care
who his running mate was. I think they will now, though, ironically when Gore has the absolute most clout of anyone I can think of.

Gore/Clark
Gore/Kerry
Gore/Boxer

5. While I think Lieberman was a bad choice, I don't think it made any difference.
But I'm focused on 2008, not 2000. I'd like to see a Gore-Feingold ticket, or a Gore-Clark ticket.

7. If Clark Foregoes a Bid for the Top of the Ticket...

... I think he'd make a real difference as the running mate for whoever ends up being the nominee.

Just looking at his recent swing through the South, it's pretty clear he connects with rural audiences (especially near military bases): http://securingamerica.com/

21. The Obvious Choice is Bob Graham, but...
...for all we know, Al may have offered the VP slot to Graham, and got turned down.

If anyone (Graham or anyone else) did turn Al down, this fact would have been kept secret.

12. Gore's Eleven...
... if he did that, he might as well pre-nominate his Cabinet, and call it Gore's 11.

I doubt that Gore could have come even this close without Lieberman in Florida...

I always thought he should have had Sam Nunn as a running mate in 2000.

18. Which Red State in 00 or 04 Does Feingold Flip in 08?
Edited on Sun Jan-21-07 05:41 PM by CorpGovActivist
I understand the "party faithful's" admiration of Feingold, but the point of this exercise is to hold an "iffy" blue state or - better still - flip a red state in '08.

So, if anyone can help explain how a Feingold Veep nod does that...
