A study by the world's leading experts says global warming will happen faster and be more devastating than previously thought

Global warming is destined to have a far more destructive and earlier impact than previously estimated, the most authoritative report yet produced on climate change will warn next week.

A draft copy of the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, obtained by The Observer, shows the frequency of devastating storms - like the ones that battered Britain last week - will increase dramatically. Sea levels will rise over the century by around half a metre; snow will disappear from all but the highest mountains; deserts will spread; oceans become acidic, leading to the destruction of coral reefs and atolls; and deadly heatwaves will become more prevalent.

The impact will be catastrophic, forcing hundreds of millions of people to flee their devastated homelands, particularly in tropical, low-lying areas, while creating waves of immigrants whose movements will strain the economies of even the most affluent countries.

it is estimated only about a billion world wide will survive global warming and it wont be at the present quality of life

a short while ago i stood there and watched folks waltzing over the border, could have done so myself, without any official checking

our borders are utterly undefended against men on foot and on horseback, we're fighting the last war (airplanes)

I'm doing the guest lecture on global warming impacts in an environmental science class tomorrow. This isn't pretty, but the students need to hear about this (several of the IPCC researchers work here in town).

some of James Lovelock's (Gaia Hypothesis) recent articles concerning global warming?

We are presently involved in a pretty serious positive feedback loop it seems.

I remember reading much of the IPCC's initial report on global warming a few years back and it seems they are now speaking more frankly and with a greater sense of alarm.

I'm going to walk them through it slowly since I don't want to panic them ... that recent apparent "surge" in atmospheric CO2 levels doesn't look good, and I'm hoping that we've underestimated time lags and negative feedbacks or "traffic bumps" in the system.
