...of one of the more notorious London soccer clubs, let me say that the rumors of the demise of the "football hooligan" (as we Limeys like to call them) is somewhat exaggerated. Would that it weren't so. If I had to rely on a bunch of boozed-up racist oiks with anger-management issues to defend me, I'd put a gun in my own mouth.

Developers put up a lot of very expensive houses all around the grounds (which had formerly been a blighted inner-city area), so the predominantly working-class fans would come out past all the Mercs and BMWs parked in the driveways of the $1 million+ homes. As inevitably as day follows night, the Nazi salutes would start, followed by "seig heils" and goosestepping, escalating to rocks and paving stones being thrown through car and house windows. The cops would retaliate and the brawl would begin. There were always injuries.

Fortunately, I lived in some crappy student housing, so we weren't usually targeted, but a few unfortunates were beaten up for the crime of being "students."
