Liddy Dole rumored to bail on Chimpy
Bush may lose N.C. ally

f George Bush loses Elizabeth Dole on the war in Iraq, he is in big trouble.

Though North Carolina's senior senator continues to support the war, there are hints she is taking a more independent view of the president's plan to increase troops there.

Bush has had no more steadfast allies on the war than the two Tar Heel senators, Republicans Dole and Richard Burr.

But after the president's announcement of an escalation of troops, Burr and Dole responded differently.

Burr, who recently returned from Iraq, said he supported the increase in troops "provided those troops are given a clearly defined mission and achievable military objectives."

Dole, who was in Iraq last spring, was more hesitant, saying she was "inclined" to support the troop increase.

As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Dole said she "want(s) to know more details about the specific missions these men and women will perform, and how this new direction will get the job done, stabilize Iraq, and allow our troops in harm's way to return home."

The difference between Burr's support and Dole's more qualified support is subtle, but it's significant.

1. Guess What, She's Up For Reelection In '08
Amazing how a pending election clarifies ones position.

5. Oh, so now she wants to lose, too?
Imagine that!

I will never forget when she made that comment on Russert's program - about how the Dems who want to resolve Iraq now and get our troops deployed really wanted "to lose". I thought the Dems on the panel were going to leap out of their skins.

What a very terrible person she is.

12. as the Repub Senate campaign director (whatever the title) - she
tried to sell the senate races as "preventing the dems from taking over and trying to impeach the president" - very weak meme (esp given the climate - but then again what material did she have to work with). She has been in far over her head. Almost as if she is working for irrelevancy.

7. I disagree with a statement here....
>>
Bush has had no more steadfast allies on the war than the two Tar Heel senators, Republicans Dole and Richard Burr.
>>

I disagree -- Senators Cornyn and Hutchison (both from Texas) are just as "steadfast allies", if not more so.

9. I can't wait to get rid of her...but don't see anyone strong
yet on the scene. Edwards could take her seat in a hearbeat...but he's running for President. Hopefully someone will turn up in the next year...we don't need a DINO Dem like some of them who have run in the past.

14. What moderate Dem do we have in NC that can challenge her?
With the right candidate, I think we can take this seat. "Diddy" is obviously worried about dwindling support for this war in her state. Her caution is purely driven by politics and not out of concern for our troops that are getting killed over there.

16. My goodness, Liddy seems to have a lot of questions
All of a sudden she wants to know about missions and objectives, the means to accomplish same, and how soon the troops can come home. Now, if I was a cynical sumbitch, I would note that all these questions from a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee might have had a little more immediacy when Mrs. Dole was in the majority party. I wonder why she didn't ask those questions in the last three or four years?

her decision a long time ago disgusts me greatly. It's all about politics, the integrity and moral genes have disappeared?
