Is Jimmy Carter the most religious president ever?
Edited on Tue Feb-07-06 02:53 PM by Bluzmann57
He most certainly is the most religious and morally upright President of my lifetime, 1957-now. People tried to link him with scandal, but no one ever succeeded. Mr. Carter was, and is truly a man of peace and morals. Will anyone from the bush family ever do great humanitarian works after leaving office? I mean get down and dirty with us "common folks". Mr. Carter did and still does. He knows real and true values, unlike the "religious" right. I remember an interview he did with a certain mens magazine before he became President, and he admitted that he had "lusted" after other women. He never acted upon that lust though. And that was the key. He is true blue to Rosalynn and his children, he is also true blue to his state and his country. I wouldn't be surprised if he weeps when in private because of what this country has become. He did nail the bush administration on illegal spying as well as Katrina today, and I think he was speaking from a moral standpoint, as well as a political one. It is just wrong to spy illegally and it was wrong to cast out the poor people along the Gulf Coast and Mr. Carter knows it full well. What a great man! Well, I hope I haven't babbled on too long. Thank you to DU for allowing me to pay tribute to a great man.

Edited because spelling errors irritate me.

True morals and courage to act upon said moral beliefs even if it's unpopular. Mr.Carter did that.

8. They are not equal.
Do you realize how incredibly offensive that is to an atheist?

20. Where does the poster say they're equal?
Most religions do teach morality. But no one's saying that they're one and the same.

Spoken as a non-offended atheist... ;-)

2. He is a true humanitarian.
A wonderful, wonderful person. All ex Presidents should strive to be more like Jimmy Carter.

4. Not just EX-Presidents. All Presidents should strive to be fully human.
What we see in that office now is an abject failure to be so.

5. Good point.
What we have in the WH now is sub-human. His disdain for the truth and the lives of the less fortunate is mind boggling.

21. I really dislike this "sub-human" talk
Edited on Tue Feb-07-06 04:59 PM by 0rganism
No other animal in the world lies, cheats, steals, and murders the way humans do.

When we attribute qualities of honesty and integrity to "full humanity," we do our own history a disservice.

George W. Bush is fully human, as were Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Napoleon, and thousands of other murderous imperial tyrants over the centuries. We are a species of artists and scientists and peacemakers just as we are a species of vandals and fanatics and warriors. One does not lose humanity through mass murder -- indeed, we are the only species who could mass murder. The slave owner no more loses his humanity than does the slave, the murderer no more than the murdered, the rapist no more than the raped. All human. All of us.

Understand this, or lose understanding of your own fully human nature.

7. I would call him the most moral in my lifetime
The most "religious" ? No, that would easily be Bush. Remember folks. Religion does NOT equal morality. The religious may be moral and they may be immoral.

This may seem a silly distinction to make but to an atheist, equating morality with religion is EXTREMELY offensive.

12. I have no doubt bush believes in a higher power
but he is certainly not a particularly religious man. He doesn't give a damn about the poor and downtrodden among us, he obviously doesn't want peace either. I am sorry to offend you, but about 99% of the world equates morals with religion. Even Muslims, Buddhists, and all other religions out there. They all have a belief in some sort of higher power. Their moral beliefs may differ from others; witness the riots in Europe over some cartoon; but they do have what they believe are morals.

13. Maybe this is what is wrong with religion.
Maybe the Greeks had it right. Placate your dieties with offerings so they leave you alone. Otherwise if you offend them, you will have a lot of difficulties ahead.

Ethics, morals and understanding life were left to the philosophers to think about and to debate. This is where many of the ideas were born that we hold dear to us today, like democracy.

15. That still does not mean that morality = religion
Edited on Tue Feb-07-06 03:57 PM by Caution
Put yourself in my place. I'm an atheist. You are calling me immoral. That's offensive. And frankly your numbers are off. 99% is not accurate. Not remotely. Buddhists alone make up roughly 5% of the population.

Buddhists do NOT believe in a god from which morality issues. There are 350 million of them. Nor do they believe that people who are irreligious or not buddhists are immoral. That is primarily a Judeo-Christian-Islamic conceit.

Additionally, rioting over the cartoon is not a question or morality, it is a question of religiou tolerance and sensitivity.

The Crusades were in many ways a heckuva lot worse than the riots which are occuring now and they occurred for roughly equal stupidity.

If I were to call you immoral how would you react?

Finally, A Gallup poll in 2005 showed 5% of the US population feel that God does not exist. A poll in 2004 by the BBC showed the number of people who don't believe in God to be larger, at 10%. It should be noted that not everyone who doesn't believe in God necessarily self-identifies as an atheist. Would you call all of them immoral too?

23. I did not call you immoral
And my numbers were purely hypothetical. But you seem to want me, and others to change our views for you, one person. It ain't happening. Now, just to clear it up, ATHEISTS CAN BE MORAL, RELIGIOUS PEOPLE CAN BE IMMORAL. Not all atheists are moral, not all religious people are immoral. Anyone who says otherwise is probably one who says that one particular race is lazy, or thieves. We all agree that is not the case. I am not going to get into a pissing match with you. You have your beliefs, I have mine. This is America, we can agree to disagree. For now anyway.

9. Jimmy Carter's biggest problem was that he was too good........
and too honest to be the President of the United States. In their true form, the rethugs attempted to annihilate this great man and human being, even in the last hours of his presidency. If there is a definition for a 'good and true' Christian, Jimmy Carter exemplifies it with his speech and actions.

He is busy practicing the tenets of his beliefs instead of simply preaching them.
