Bush Obsessed with Clearing Brush at His Waco Compound --->>>

CRAWFORD, TEXAS

Bush finds hard work at his ranch therapeutic
One of the President's favorite activities at his Crawford ranch is clearing brush.
BY LISA REIN
Washington Post Service

CRAWFORD, Texas - On most of the 365 days he's enjoyed at his secluded ranch here, President Bush's idea of paradise is to hop in his white Ford pickup truck in jeans and work boots, drive to a stand of cedar trees and whack them to the ground.

If the soil is moist enough, he'll light a match and burn the wood. If it's parched, as it is across Texas now, the wood will sit in piles scattered over the 1,600-acre spread until they're safe for a ranch hand to torch -- or until the president can come home and do the honors himself.

Sometimes this activity is the only official news to come out of what aides call the western White House. Since Monday, when Bush retreated to the ranch for his Christmas sojourn, a spokesman has announced that the president, in between intelligence briefings, calls to advisors and bicycling, has spent much of his day clearing brush.

This might strike many Washingtonians as a heel-turning pastime. It does burn a lot of calories. But brush clearing is dusty, it's exhausting (the president goes at it in 100 degree-plus heat), and it's earsplitting, requiring earplugs to dull the chain saw's buzz.

For Bush, who is known to spend early-morning hours hacking at unwanted mesquite, huckleburrs, hanging limbs and underbrush only to go back for more after lunch, it borders on obsession.

***

Certainly the 1,583 acres of rugged canyons and rocky hillsides, creeks and pasture land on Prairie Chapel Ranch contain a lot of brush. Bush, a creature of habit, isn't in danger of finishing the job. The Bush ranch, however, is not a working ranch. The president has kept only a handful of cattle on the property since Kenneth Engelbrecht, who sold him the former hog farm six years ago, stopped leasing back some pasture land that supported a herd of cows.

High Noon in Crawford
By EVGENIA PERETZ

<snip>

One such Crawford citizen is Larry Mattlage, Fred's distant cousin, whose family has been in Crawford since 1887 and who owns a farm three-quarters of a mile from Bush's property. Mattlage is the real Crawford cowboy—with land, goats, sheep, a white beard, legs that stretch a mile—and he believes that Bush has done nothing for his beloved town except exploit it. First off, the idea that Bush is some kind of "rancher" just makes him laugh.

"He don't know dirt," says Mattlage, who is friendly with Bush's ranch foreman, Robert Blossman. All that brush clearing, Mattlage says, "is for show. It's not necessary.… is where the birds live. That's birdseed. That's deer food. That's cow food.… makes cedar posts. If they're grown properly, they make a good post that will last forever." Bush's ignorance on the matter doesn't surprise him. "You don't move into these boonies and really understand the land, you know?" says Mattlage. " got a lot of money, and they got access to a lot of machinery and a lot of bulldozers and a lot of destructive equipment, and before you know it, they can screw up something so damn bad.… A rich man with a bulldozer is a dangerous thing!" Furthermore, the notion that Bush is "friends" with anyone in Crawford is hogwash. "He's a visitor to this group of people," says Mattlage. "Nobody knows anything about him. I know you better than I know my neighbor."

Yee Haw, BIG COWBOY, ride 'em!

Composer/Lyricist Johnny Mercer got **'s number, a LONG time ago (check out Bing Crosby or Harry Connick Jr's recording of the following:)

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
But my legs ain't bowed, and my cheeks ain't tan
I'm a cowboy who never saw a cow
Never roped a steer 'cause I don't know how
And I sure ain't fixin' to start it now
yippee-i-o-ki-ay, yippee-i-o-ki-ay

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
And I learned to ride before I learned to stand
I'm a ridin fool who is up to date
I know every trail in the Lone Star State
'Cause I ride the range in a Ford V-8
yippee-i-o-ki-ay, yippee-i-o-ki-ay

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
And I come to town just to hear the band
I know all the songs that the cowboys know
'Bout the big corral where the dogies go
'Cause I learned them all on the radio
yippee-i-o-ki-ay, yippee-i-o-ki-ay

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
Where the west is wild round the borderland
Where the buffalo roam around the zoo
And the Indians make you a rug or two
And the old Bar-X is a Bar-be-cue
yippee-i-o-ki-ay, yippee-i-o-ki-ay

I'm a pioneer who began from scratch
I don't bat an eye in a shootin' match.
They don't call me Elmer, they call me Satch.
yippee-i-o-ki-ay
yippee-i-o-ki-ay

Get along little horsy
Get along little horsy
yippee-i-o-ki-ay.

12. Some pretty heavy symbolism
in the fact that his N°1 hobby should be an act of tearing down and destroying. He obviously gets off on this even more than by "beating" his co-bike riders. Have we ever observed him doing any constructive leisure activity--or for that matter even playing harmlessly with his dogs? One screwed up MoFo, IMHO. SG

19. There's something wierd about his obsession
As Mr. Mattlage says, what he is doing isn't helping his ranch. Cedar is hardly "brush"-it is good for the land, and the wood is valuable. (It is also sacred to many Native Americans). To simply chop it up and then torch it--it is pure destruction. But this behavior is indicative of Bush's destructive behavior in general, don't you think?

Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 11:25 AM by ThomWV
Jesus, I've been at it for 30 years on this little 100 acres. Shit, if its brush you want to clear, and you really give a shit about it, you go rent yourself a dozer for a couple of days and push the shit up. Then you burn it.

Do that once and after that its all gravy.

This asswipe is just fucking around for he cameras. Every swinging-dick that every pulled the rope on a Stihl knows it too.

29. So Bush got a chainsaw for Xmas...
messed around for half a day but wasn't making much progress so he escapes from the SS men and drives into town to the hardware store. "I got this damn thing just the other day and it's new but it cuts REALLY SLOW!" He tells the clerk.

"Well," the guy says, "Let's check it out." He pulls the cord, it roars to life and Bush jumps about a foot high and says "WHAT"S THAT NOISE?"

32. The Vanity Fair article is killer. It interviews people who know *
is a total fakeass jerk who wouldn't know one end of a cow from another, and who cuts down valuable cedar trees for photo ops and for his own demented love of destruction. It is also instructive to read that * loves to do bully-like old macho shit like bounce reporters around in the back of his pickup, beat them at running and/or biking, etc., like the big swinging dick he thinks he is.

Now, here's my idea -- all the news outlets need to get together and decide to send ONLY reporters who are extremely physically fit types (marathon runners, distance bikers, etc.) to cover * any time he is in Crawford. It would be even better if these reporters were extreme athletes in their 40's and 50's. Even if they had to hire them specifically for covering * at his crappy ranch.

Can you imagine this, Bush getting shown up at his own game, and everyone reporting on it?

39. plus his habit of playing nasty practical jokes
Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 06:42 PM by Lisa
This was observed as early as 2000. When I saw this story, I figured that Bush had a mean, bullying side to him, and I hoped that it would be kept under control by his staff, family, and media criticism.

Evidently not.

"But in one case, he can't resist having a little fun anyway. "Can you drink this?" asks a guest reaching down to the water. "Sure," says Bush, watching the fellow taking a handful to his mouth. "Except for the cow s___." The spit-take follows in perfect order."

http://www.time.com/time/poy2000/mag/ranch.html

p.s. I love your idea for busting up Bush's little "Hundred Degree Club". Bet he wouldn't be giving out many T-shirts if he were shown up at his own game, by "effete liberals". May I also suggest sending Will Ferrell, a marathon runner, who spoofed Bush mercilessly on SNL and now does opposition ads and benefit performances for the Sierra Club, etc. And my boss is in his late fifties and still does endurance runs and hundred-kilometer bike rides -- he works part-time for the UN and is absolutely furious with how the White House has wrecked America's esteem abroad. I would love to see him leave Bush in the dust!

34. Priceless first line: "On most of the 365 days he's enjoyed ..."
The clear intention of this sentence is to drive home that bush, in 5 years of being in office, has spent one entire year enjoying his ranch. Okay, maybe he picks up a pen and signs something sneaky once in a while, but he isn't working. Only fweepers can kid themselves about that.

One year. One entire year. Does that not make your head want to explode?
