Year-End Stories; Impeachment, the Constitution in Crisis, Election Reform, Torture Memos Happy New Year
There is really no let up to the issues were covering and pushing.
First, impeachment continues in the news. Molly Ivins has an excellent and timely editorial, the Detroit Metro Times weighs in with a good story on my censure and select committee resolutions, and Hazel Trice Edney has a useful piece on the latest impeachment buzz from the Chicago Defender and other African American newspapers.
Second, thanks again to David Swanson of CensureBush.org, who has posted more articles from our Constitution in Crisis Report. The latest two concern the work we have done to definitively confirm and corroborate the accuracy of the Downing Street Minutes (via Bradblog), as well as the clear evidence of pressure brought to bear on the CIA by the Bush Administration to manipulate intelligence in the run up to the Iraq War (via oped news).
Third, the New York Times has a good editorial entitled "Conspiring Against the Voters" noting that Bush has audaciously placed Hans von Spakovsky at the Federal Election Commission, who reportedly was involved in overruling the career DOJ staff to rubberstamp Tom DeLay's Texas gerrymander as well as the purging of legal voters in Florida in 2000. We must never forget that the reason we have the mess we do today is because of the massive irregularities in Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004. In that regard, let me highly commend to you all Mark Crispin Miller's excellent book on the 2004 election entitled "Fooled Again" (via Amazon).
Fourth, I am now focusing on the torture memos (via RawStory) released by former British Diplomat Craig Murray describing torture and misuse of the information. Let me know your thoughts about the implications of these memos and what can or should be done about it.
It has been a hectic year for us. We began by investigating and reporting on the Ohio election fraud, we launched the ConyersBlog, we fought the GOP on Schiavo, we investigated the Downing Street Minutes, we staved off a one-sided Patriot Act extension, and finished the year with our Constitution in Crisis Report. And we're just beginning -- we will launch our drive to the Majority next year, which I hope will be the year of accountability for the Republicans as well. Sadlly, we also saw the loss of a civil rights legend, my good friend Rosa Parks, passed away this year, shortly before the 50th anniversary of her heroic decision not to give up her seat on the bus.
Thanks for your support and happy new year.

If this man can fight as long as he has, and continue fighting unabated, I think I can stop complaining and worrying about the future. Just work. Then work harder.
Representative John Conyers (D-MI) - AMERICA'S CONGRESSMAN
I had never heard of him. That would be expected though, as my paper is the Columbus Dispatch. I've read much about the man and like what I see. Unfortunately, there is the matter with his wife and that roundhouse she threw and connected with on that woman. No amount of money or GOOD press will ever be able to take away that moment. Too bad!
2. Mr. Conyers: Please promise that you won't give Bush the green light
I think it's very important, right now when we're just getting hints of Bush's intentions toward Iran, to get assurances from our Dem leaders that THEY WON'T GIVE BUSH A GREEN LIGHT TO ATTACK IRAN. We now have the experience of Iraq behind us; to allow our House and Senate leaders to act like warmongers would be the last of the Democratic party. Let's get the promises NOW, before it gets too complicated and the media has their way with it.
3. The problem with Iran is that their WORSE than Sadam ever was
and the international community agrees. Iraq was an instance where the international community couldn't even support Bush.
What we need is COMPETENCY and legitimate OVERSITE in Washington.
But no matter what happens with Iran, KEEP BUSH AND RUMMY OUT OF THE PLANNING AND LONG TERM IMPLEMENTATION!
Demand internation support, demand the U.N., and demand COMPETENT leaders from other countries take the lead. Clearly, the U.S. under Bush is not capable of anything anymore.
the general dissatisfaction of the popular support for the Ayatollahs changed completely by the deliberate hostility of the Bush regime. The turnabout was dramatic and swift and headed toward the dismal edge of confrontation and tyranny. North Korea also about faced back into the "red" zone.
Shiite Oil Empire(on a specific lifespan relative to oil supply) would not be so bad if they don't sponsor terrorism or secretly fund it like the Saudis do. WE are empowering the abuse of the oil funds for "security" and reactionary programs whose by product is the squelching of democracy and progress in prosperity which could moderate the area naturally.
MAD(Israel vs. Islam) is an unwelcome element only if belligerent economically stressed foes are set at each other with the help of the WH.
Real relationships in trade could pressure for more human rights and democracy than any bombing raid could.
The Oil world will be split between Saudi Arabia and Iran but more alarmingly for the multinationals, between states using their own resources for their own peoples versus piracy through destroying civil governments.
Venezuela is being challenged(by the requirement all companies submit to the state turn mixing of all brands) by Exxon because they are afraid dictators worldwide will want to control their own oil and Exxon, whose net worth is many times the whole economy of Venezuela now will go to overt legal war against a nation state, an irony lost on the Investors' Daily in which the front page article runs. Who set up those convenient, destabilizing dictatorships Exxon has lived so comfortably with in the past?
The Buish regime runs on the fire of fighting fire with the fires they themselves started or relit.
