Thank you for contacting me regarding the security of our nation's ports. I appreciate hearing your views.
As you know, a firm owned by the United Arab Emirates has acquired recently the British shipping company that operates cargo terminals at six major U.S. seaports. This transaction does not change the security operations at these ports or the people working at the docks. Overall responsibility for these ports remains with the appropriate port authority, which answers to state or local governments. Federal enforcement agencies working with state and local authorities will continue to remain in charge of port security to ensure that each port terminal meets seaport security requirements.
I understand that many Americans are alarmed at the perceived security risks involving this acquisition. A federal multi-agency review has resulted in the approval of the transaction by the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States, which is chaired by the Secretary of the Treasury. Still, Members of Congress wish to more closely study this matter, and by all means, Congress should seek answers to all relevant questions involving the approval of this transaction. I am confident that additional Congressional oversight and assurances from the appropriate administration officials will ensure that nothing is permitted to jeopardize our nation's port security.
Thank you again for contacting me. Please don't hesitate to contact me again on this or any other matter of concern to you.
Sincerely,
John McCain United States Senator
