You can become a "reborn virgin." Black women and abortion in MS.
Edited on Tue Feb-28-06 11:37 PM by Maddy McCall
Daisy Anderson, 17, held her 4-month-old baby on her lap at a Jackson(Mississippi) crisis pregnancy center while listening to a lecture about the best way to avoid getting pregnant: don't have sex.

Four teens - three pregnant and one cradling her newborn - sat around her on couches and chairs at the Women's Resource Center, an organization that targets black women.

"You can become a reborn virgin,'" said the instructor, Hallie Duckworth, who is helping set up a Madison home for teen mothers. "I believe God covers every sin we have."

Concerned about the disproportionate number of African-American women who undergo abortions, the founders of the Women's Resource Center launched the organization in 2004 to reach out to young, mostly black, pregnant women. By promoting abstinence and supporting women through pregnancy and early motherhood, the center hopes to avert future unintended pregnancies.

Anti-abortion activists such as Day Gardner, national director of the Washington, D.C.-based Black Americans for Life, believe the African-American abortion rate is so high because many abortion providers are located in inner cities with large concentrations of blacks.

"When you are frustrated or realize you're pregnant with another child people want you to believe there's no other option but to abort your child," Gardner said.

Kayla Forbes, a 17-year-old black mother of a 4-month-old baby boy, said she called an abortion clinic when she learned she was pregnant but never followed through because her mother forbid her.

"The longer I waited I just had to accept it," the Jackson 11th-grader said.

1. Reborn virgin huh
Twenty two years ago when I attended Washington State Univ we were visited by sister cindy and brother jed...what a piece of work they were. At that time the term was 'born again virgin.'
Same shtick...new terms.

5. Born again virgin
Indeed, that is what I remembered as well.

Different people selling the term but the same line of BS.

2. That explains the whole Jesus' Virgin Birth thingy, right?
Mary got knocked up by a sailor, but became a reborn virgin. I get it now!

3. I don't know about the virgin part, but
if you're 17, unmarried and have a 4 month old baby, not having sex for a while is not bad advice.

4. Not practical, though.
Good in theory, but difficult to practice.

6. Here's a practical tip to help. If you meet a potential sexual partner...
be sure to mention that you have a kid. A large number of potential partners will bail upon hearing that, thus helping to beat the odds.

9. Or...
Get on the pill and make your partner use a condom.

Honestly, isn't this what we need to be teaching young people? She's going to have sex. People need to accept that fact and educate our youth on how to prevent disease and pregnancy.

That's just my humble opinion.

17. I feel that this issue impacts everyone
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 12:51 AM by Lone_Star_Dem
In my experience many of the same people who claim to not support a right to choose don't feel that lack of right applies to their family. After all, their daughter has her entire future ahead of her and deserves better. :eyes:

Yes. We need to do the work ourselves. When I became aware of exactly how many young people are undereducated in proper birth control and safe sexual practices I was amazed.

The reality is that people are going to have sex. We, as a society, would be much further ahead to educate rather than condemn.

10. the most interesting solution would be of course
that the DEMOCRATIC PARTY or affiliated organisations SPONSORED contraception and contraception education in those neighbourhoods. That's how you win elections and support besides the fact that you do a good job.

Have this idea ever reach the mind of Hillary Clinton et al ? I bet not

20. Between going to school and caring for a four month old
I don't think it would be difficult to abstain from sex at all.

I sure abstained from sex when my kid was four months old and I was married. I didn't even have time to sleep, much less %$%^.

8. This right wing attack on Clinton...he made oral sex more popular among
teens...it should be! Oral sex is a good alternative to sex that can lead to pregnancy. HIV transmission is much, much less likely. As a society we're so hung up.

15. To be fair, other STDs are easily passed through oral sex, so it still
carries inherent dangers. Of course, RW attacks on this issue have nothing to do with protecting kids from disease, they have to do with legislating morality.

18. Very true about othe STDs...oral sex is not risk free at all
(I should have said that) but it's crazy that it is still a taboo subject to many ppl. I agree with your accessment of RW attacks. (oral sex cannot lead to procreation so it's evil..oh and in some state it was in their sodomy laws).

They'd rather not tell kids things like have oral sex using a condom or dental dam, fun and no chance of pregnancy, little risk of STDs. No, they say abstinence and abstinence only.

21. Wasn't that an episode of the cartoon "King of the Hill"?
Where the ditsy and all-too-easy niece gets baptized in the local river and emerges yelling "I'm a virgin, Uncle Hank! I'm a virgin, Aunt Peggy!"

Oh yeah, no real girls actually got pregnant for that episode. :-(

24. More fundie lies
:eyes:

"I believe God covers every sin we have."

Does that mean I can go kill someone then become a "reborn non-killer" because I want to? Or does it only apply to things the fundies conveniently want it to?
